    Ramadan, the Islamic Holy Month of fasting, ends with the holiday of Eid ul-Fitr (also Eid al-Fitr)
    and is celebrated by Muslims around the world on August 30 in 2011.


    In the Islamic calender, a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so observing Muslims will start celebrating Eid ul-Fitr on the sunset of Monday, the 29th of August.
    Although Eid ul-Fitr is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, since the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. This difference means Eid ul-Fitr moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days every year.
    Eid ul-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month in the Islamic calendar, which follows Ramadan, and is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the Islamic calendar. Because the day depends on the sighting of the moon or scientific calculations, the exact date can vary from country to country.


    Eid ul-Fitr is a three day celebration in Islamic countries and is called “The Smaller Eid” (Arabic: al-‘īdu ṣ-ṣaghīr) in comparison to “Eid ul-Adha” that lasts four days and is called “The Greater Eid” (Arabic: al-‘īdu l-kabīr). The holiday is often abbreviated to Eid , an Arabic word meaning “festivity”, while Fiṭr means “to break the fast” (and can also mean “nature”, from the word “fitrah”) and so symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period.
    In most Muslim countries, the entire 3-day period is an official government/school holiday.

    Eid ul-Fitr is a celebration of joy and Muslims are not only celebrating the end of fasting, but also giving thanks to Allah (God) for the help and strength that he gave them throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan to help them practise selfcontrol.
    Everyone is wearing best or new clothes, people are decorating their homes and families and friends give gifts to children who kept their first fast during Ramadan.

    On Eid ul-Fitr there are special services out of doors and in Mosques, processions through the streets, and a special celebratory meal – eaten during daytime, is the first daytime meal Muslims will have had in a month.
    Eid is also a time of forgiveness, and making amends.
