Do you think that S2 of 2009 is a good time to do business in Romania?
For a Romanian company? For a foreign company? For an entrepreneur?
As a foreign / Romanian investor - what sector is more interesting for you?
According to ZF estimates, the hardest hit retail sectors, automotive and electric & IT retail, will lose more than two billion euros of their turnover compared with 2008, given that the downward trend of the sales will continue until the end of the year.
At the same time, The Romanian Agency for Foreign Investment (ARIS) is currently providing assistance for four investment projects related to the production of photovoltaic equipment, totally worth 445m euros, which are likely to create 1,650 jobs in the future production units. (Source: ZF)
What is your opinion on this and what would you advise others interested to enter the Romanian market and do business in Romania?
Look forward to your in-put - thanks!

Yes it is a good time to invest.
The costs are quite low in some areas, exist enough energy resources.
Romania does not have serious problems with water and food resources.
IT area has a good basis and is growing.
All other depends of the business idea, organization and working discipline.

Why do you think it is a good time for your products? For your services?
On what data do you base your considerations? Who is the provider of this data - is it a trustworthy consultant or just an amateur telling you: yes, it's the right time to come to Romania, we'll help you, don't worry?
From our experience as a market entry consultant operating in this market for the last 9 years, it is more important to tell the client the TRUTH about the market opportunities / lack of opportunities than to make them come to Romania and then fail, after they spend a lot of money.
Do you agree?

I agree 100%.
I am surprized to see such optimism in some posts, without knowing which activity is really involved or mentionning markets that are not even mature in Romania.
We work with UE structural funds, mainly for SME.
In december 08 was a "call for projetcs" session and companies willing to invest in agriculture applied for 50% subsidies.
By the time the results were published (in May) nearly one of ten selected companies couldn't cope with that investment any more.
How many investments would have been postponed, or cancelled, if it had been without UE's financing...?
So yes, now may be a good time to invest in Romania
IF you have the cash to it (almost) by yourself,
IF your business partners and clients won't jeopardize your cash flow, and
IF your product/service is still needed today (Romania learned the hard way what is "cost killing").
All investors are warmly welcome... once a market study concluded positiv !

The World Bank forecasts a 4% contraction in Romania’s gross domestic product this year, followed by a 0.5% GDP growth in 2010, and 2.5% in 2011, respectively, according to "Global Development Finance 2009" report published last Monday.
At the same time, it seems that Romania will register the highest growth rate of the economy in the coming decade. Romania’s gross domestic product will post an average annual increase of some 4.5 percent, above the values for Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. Moreover, Romania, together with Turkey, will be the best destinations for foreign direct investments in Emerging Europe, Middle East, and Africa, according to a recent report by Merrill Lynch.
However, in March 2009, Merrill Lynch revised downwards its forecast on Romania’s GDP contraction in 2009 to 3.4% from the previous 1.5%, but changed upwards the predictions for 2010 to a 3.1% economic contraction from the 5% previously estimated, due to the possible fiscal-adjustment driven by the IMF agreement.
So... whom to believe...?
What is your opinion?
