    FDI in Romania doubles in Oct 2008

    Foreign investments conducted in October this year doubled against October 2007, with the volume of share capital subscribed by foreign companies with their Romanian subsidiaries amounting to 339.2 million euros, according to data provided to ZF by the National Trade Registry (ONRC).

    Amid the international financial crisis, analysts were expecting a reduction in the capital flow from foreign companies to their local subsidiaries, but ONRC data reveal that October was in fact one of the best months of the year in terms of foreign investments in the form of capital contributions. In the first ten months of the year, the value of foreign investments amounted to 4.1 billion euros, double as much as in January-October 2007.

    "I think this is a conversion of debt to share capital. Otherwise, I don't see how so much money could have entered the Romanian market. October was not a month of great enthusiasm," said Florin Pogonaru, president of the Romanian Businesspeople Association. He added that this was not a bad thing, because it would prove that the private debt, which "everyone is afraid of, is not that large".
