Pages being removed from the Google index
Over the past weeks, I have done some updates on my website, which included changing the title and description meta tags of a number of pages. In order to verify to what extent these changes were picked up by Google, I did some Google searches using the 'site:http://www.mysite.com' command. Doing this, I discovered that the number of pages returned (and consequently indexed) did fluctuate. It increased, but sometimes it also decreased. This might have been a quirk of the search algorithm, but using Google’s webmaster tools did confirm these figures.

The variations are not enormous, some 5%, but since I did not check the exact pages that where in or out the index, there might be more pages involved.

So, my (poor) understanding of the Google universe was that once a page was indexed, it would stay in the index unless the page was removed from the website or some other intentional action was taken, but apparently, this is not the case.

Anyone an idea what makes that pages get indexed but disappear again?
