Revelstoke BC, located just short of 2 hours past Golden (close to Calgary Alberta), is one of Canada's pioneer adventure destinations. In 1915 it became home to North America's first ski-jump venue, and in the 20's local resident Nels Nelsen held the title as a World Champion ski jumper. This town of 8,000 residents enjoy some of the world's best backcountry, heli & cat ski opportunities and starting this coming 2007/08 ski season it welcomes the world to its slopes of Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR).

This new full service ski and snowboard destination will offer up North America's highest vertical drop, delivering 6,000 vertical feet runs (that is over twice of Fernie's). Revelstoke for years has been known for its incredible backcountry options and is home to the Canadian Avalanche Association. Boasting 40-60 feet of snow annually, enough to cover a four storey building, the slopes of Revelstoke receive approximately twice the annual snowfall of Whistler/Blackcomb, an extra 10 feet over Fernie and 25 feet more than most US ski resorts.

"It's located within the Selkirk Mountain Range on Mount Mackenzie," explains the resorts spokesperson, Pamela Groberman. "The development and design team have been working on this full master plan for years, residents have been hearing about something for almost 20 years and now it's finally becoming reality," said Groberman. As of the coming season Revelstoke Mountain Resort will be open for business with its $22 million dollar eight person gondola and quad chair allowing people to take on over 20 runs. "Just think, some of the territory that is accessible now has been CAT skied for 20 years, so it will be beautifully treed and matured," explains Groberman. "The terrain will be a great balance for all skiers with a good variety of beginner, intermediate and expert runs." By build-out, expected within 10 years, the resorts will feature over 100 runs and 21 lifts. Within its initial phase, the gondola will take guests approximately 3,000 vertical feet up and matched with a quad chair that will take guests to just over 5,000 feet worth of vertical. The following season, 2008/09, the gondola line will be extended and with the installation of additional chairs, it will take the title for North America's highest vertical rise at 6,000 feet. "The clearance for the gondola is already done, and they move ahead with installation this summer," said Groberman.

In January 2007, the RMR acquired Selkirk Tangiers Heli-Skiing and 500,000 additional acres of skiable terrain within the Monashee's and Selkirk Mountain Ranges. The resort's inclusion of a heli-centre directly within the village will offer guests the opportunity to jump in the chopper within walking distance from their front door. Unique to North America, this adventure destination will feature lift serviced, cat and heli-ski opportunities all from the village. "You'll be able to put your kids into ski camp and you and your wife will be able to go out heli skiing for the day," said Groberman.

Shops, restaurants, bars, the heli-centre and an eclectic mix of real estate will make up the RMR village area. According to its website, buildings will be installed using the latest green and energy efficient techniques with this environmental concern seen through in the use of energy efficient services and by incorporating green fuels. This weekend becomes the first time the public is able to purchase real estate at the resort with its initial offering of condo's to be found within "Nelsen's Lodge" in honour of the famed ski jumper. "Revelstoke is home to Nels Nelsen, who in the 1920's held the title of World ski-jump Champion," explains Groberman, "Revelstoke is known for adventure and the team of developers is working to keep its theme. The town has been very positive from the start of the development; the resort's build team have welcomed and encouraged residents' feedback, with everyone pitching in to make it a sustainable development." Groberman discussed how the town of Revelstoke has that perfect "ski town feel" to it, "a great vibe fills the streets" she said, "it's a very young community with lots of excellent energy."
