Just to bring in some french region: Val Thorens - nice night life, possible to stay in an apartment right beside the slope, steep and interesting for good skiers! :-)
If you have to plan in advance, I agree with Simone and would go to Val Thorens in France. It's huge, you can have the apartment on the slope and lifts used to be fast.
This is what I would suggest, too. Val Thorens is in a huge area consisting of three valleys that are all connected to one skiing area.

I have been twice there. Once in Val Thorens and once in St. Martin de Belleville. In my opinion the best time to go there is from middle of March to middle of April. Lots of snow and sun;)
Have fun there.
