    Immersive Workspaces presentation
Last month was invited to see the new "Immersive Workspaces" (IWS) platform created by Rivers Run Red and Linden Lab. Having used telecom-based and web-based conferencing and collaboration platforms for many years I was eager to see if IWS is able to turn Second Life into a useful business application. My short conclusion: Not yet.

It is undisputed that meetings in immersive 3D environments have certain advantages over plain web-based solutions. But they come with many technical and psychological barriers. In many ways Second Life's barriers are too high to use it in an reasonable way.

IWS lowers some of these barriers. Here are some of the technical highlights:
    - come with a powerful website for all of the administrative work
    - website supports e-collaboration with the typical tools (scheduling, messaging, to-do lists, file share)
    - website supports upload of files for in-world presentation
    - afaik IWS comes with a complete out-of-the-box conference room or you can use RRR's IWS island
    - live application sharing

I was very keen on seeing the application sharing live but was disappointed by the bad technical performance. Yes, it works. No you cannot really do anything useful with it. We saw the desktop of some lady's computer and while she was talking we saw her editing documents and so. The problem still unsolved is the time delay between the moment she changed something on her screen and the moment that we were able to see that change. IWS uses streaming media to bring her screen to me and in my case the delay was about 50 seconds.

Linden Lab is desperately looking for serious application for Second Life and Second Life Grid. Business related in-world conferencing and collaboration is one of the straws they are clutching at. IWS is reducing the gap between aspirations and reality. But in my opinion they are not there yet. I would still prefer not-so-immersive web-based tools. Nevertheless IWS is a great leap in making SL more business adoptable. Just like Sloodle for e-learning and distance education.
