Yesterday I visited Helfe Ihnen's Culturegion (
http://www.design-island.info/) and had a discussion about the future of Second Life. Here's in a nutshell my opinion:
No, SL is not doomed. It is by far the best *open* virtual world out there and nothing is on the horizon (didn't go into detail on Multiverse Network
http://www.multiverse.net/ yet). And even in 5 years from now Second Life will have a place (among many other worlds).
And yes, the Second Life's public image is spoiled for at least 2 years resulting in a further retreat of global brands and their marketing dollars. I guess those who are big enough will eventually open up their own *closed* branded worlds based on vSide, there.com or even Second Life grid technology (some already did so).
What does that mean? Second Life will survive, maybe thrive as a wonderful community platform for people with common interests, as a platform for leisure and art. In particular art can benefit from the openness and freedom of the Second Life platform. (And if you are able to make money with (virtual) art, then SL could be the basis of your future wealth.)
