    3G Services on 2G Networks - how is this possible?
    Dear all,

    everybody is talking of Voice-over-IP; have you heard of IP-over-Voice or Multimedia-over-Voice circuit?!

    Well, it is a new concept from South Korea. (Alright, circuit-switched video is already well established, even though nobody uses it, right?!)

    Since mobile handsets processing power got very strong in recent years, multimedia applications such as video telephony, video ring (opposite of ring back tone) are compressed over a wireless voice circuit. When voice circuits are available in a base station, another circuit can be bundled.
    Video quality on a tiny mobile screen is acceptable.

    Therefore "3G" Services like...
    * Real-time chat, Messenger-type of communication with multiple partners.
    * Real-time MMS
    * Online gaming
    * Visual IVR/ASR - quite useful for handicapped people
    * Karaoke - song and text (well, rather fancy for the Asian world;-)
    * Mobile Payment/Online Banking where you see you balance on your screen.

    are affordable because,
    * NO 3G licence (big saving!!!),
    * NO costly network upgrade, and
    * NO expensive 3G handsets are required.
    Just this mobile application needs to be implemented on the mobile OS of the handset.

    Therefore, less developed wireless markets do not need those fancy 3G investments. Subscribers won't get High-Definition video, but they get it at an affordable tariff!

    So far, this has been implemented for some CDMA handsets from Samsung. GSM handsets will follow in Q2 2007.

    Then again if you want to provide all services you need fast access to web, or other media gateway. And we don’t have a choice but to install new HSDP BTS’s.
