Frederik Van Lierde Group moderatorThe company name is only visible to registered members.Idea for 3G Mobile Phones
Hello
I was just sitting on my desk, and I was wondering why my mobile phone has 2 cameras, but I can't use them as a video conference via my portable computer
That's way I launched this idea: I want to use my mobile phone as a webcam on my portable computer.
Is this already possible ? If yes, wich software do i need to install;
If not. Are there some managers of Nokio, SonyEricsson, Motorla,.... who want's to think about it :)
Any ideas are welcome.

Hello Mr. van Lierde,
there is a program for SonyEricsson phones which does a similar job:
http://software.hitziger.net/index.php?lng=de&show=progr...
However, I do believe it only sends stills to the computer every n seconds. (have never tested it)
If J2ME provides an API to access the video functionality of the phone, then writing an appropriate midlet should not be very difficult.
Best regards,
Alex Stumpf

Hi
Tnx, that's already a first step.
I will try very soon to work with the J2ME API's
I was wondering if other people would be interested in this idea (using your mobile phones as webcam on a portable pc) ?

Hi Frederik,
since my company develops software for mobile phones for several years I can tell you that it is currently not possible to use a mobile as a webcam (or whatever, e.g. data medium) and as a modem simultaneously. There is no device that supports such a function today as far as I know. So your idea, that is very interesting by the way, to make a video conference over your mobile, can't be realized today.
The software mentioned by alex is a good start but only part of the way to a complete solution. You are only able to make photos which will be send to your PC and from there via ftp to a server. This means no real communication with other persons.
But I am convinced that this will be the case in the future because some of the mobiles today can be used as a modem and as data medium. So to enable the device to offer both functions at the same time allows to offer very interesting solutions. We already developed a prototype for a Nokia device that comes close to such a solution. But the device therefore has to offer special features that are today not implemented.
Cheers,
Dirk

There is an application for Windows smartphones which can turn the onboard camera into a webcam, CoolCamera, although I had trouble getting it to work:
