PLANTING THE SEED WITH A GAVEL
Would you repair a clock with a hammer? Of course, you would not.
So plant the seed with a gavel?
I´m going to show you that it does make sense.
Some Toastmasters amongst us do seem to be speed farmers. They arrange a guest night and reap the harvest of 20 new Toastmasters right away. This appears to work that way in some regions. But in other regions people seem slower, more sceptical and hesitant. Division C is such a region.
Everyone has been working hard to set up clubs. In area C1, they held guest nights, had an enormous output of press releases, press talks and visits as well as networking with other civic organisations, such as Lions Clubs and Rotary, sport clubs and parent associations. They have injected fresh blood into clubs, which have been trying for quite a time to reach charter quorum, such as the Buxtehude French Club (Les Hérissons) and the Kiel Club.
Officers of existing clubs as well as Area and Division Governors have invested a tremendous amount of time and brain and yet the outcome has not been as great as forecast in summer 2005. Similar effects have been undertaken with other areas of Division C, but only the capital city of Germany (C2) seems to be fertile enough to allow for growth by 2 clubs a year.
What is my solution for this difficult situation? Firstly, keep trying constantly and with ever new methods.
Secondly, plant seeds to be harvested in the long run.
One such seed is the Gavel Club. It aims at people in institutions under the age of 18. School kids are such a typical target group. They may have passed the Youth Leadership Program and be looking for a place to continue their practise. The Gavel Club is the place to go.
What are the requirements for setting up a Gavel Club and running it?
fl The institution in which the club is to be set up has
to approve and designate a Counsellor to the Club. fl There is no minimum number of members required
    to set up the Club.
fl The registration as a Gavel Club of NAME OF INSTITUTION goes to TMI and has to be recognized by the International Executive Director.
fl After recognition the Club will be sent 20 new members kits.
fl Basic speeches that have been given in a Gavel Club can be recognized in the CTM Project Completion Record once the speaker has joined a regular TM Club.
fl The registration fee: US-$ 50.00, irrespective of the number of members. No individual registration fees! Annual dues: US-$ 48.00, irrespective of numbers of members.
What benefits do I expect to be brought about by Gavel Clubs?
fl A Gavel Club is a permanent reminder of the existence of Toastmasters, even if there is no regular TM Club in the region.
fl A Gavel Club prepares Youngsters to become regular Toastmasters when they are grown-up fl A Gavel Club helps plant a long-lasting seed.
