Romania: FMCG consumption is on the rise
According to the renowned MAGAZINUL PROGRESIV newsletter, during Q1 of this year, FMCG consumption maintained a growth rate of 18% compared to the same period last year, influenced by a 10% price increase, as well as a 7% increase of the average grocery basket, according to a GfK study. Romanian consumers reacted differently to the price increase, depending on the products they purchased, as well as on the socio-demographic structure.

Although they paid 8% more on basic groceries, consumers did not cut spending on such categories as dairy products, pasta or coffee. Non-food goods (detergent, personal care products such as deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste) were bought less frequently, but their quantity increased with each shopping trip by 6,5%. This can be explained by consumers’ preference for larger and more economic packaging.

In Bucharest, the country’s capital, FMCG consumption is on the rise, while the inhabitants of Moldova province are the most affected by price increase. Neighbourhood supermarkets, as well as traditional outlets have so far been the hardest hit by the crisis, with sales volumes slightly dropping, compared to last year.

Consumers become more interested in other modern retail formats, attracted by special offers and promotions. Low and medium income families are the most affected by the economic downturn, especially those whose head of the family is between 40 and 49 years of age. However, despite the difficult context, there are families which increased their spending, specifically those who benefit by large income and university education.

The information is based on a GfK monthly study data obtained by panel research of 2200 households and is representative nationwide.
