Bordeaux to vote Yes

Whatever the result of the French referendum on the European Constitution this weekend, leading figures in the Bordeaux wine trade will be unconditionally voting 'Oui.'
'We need to be strong and powerful and that means being part of a united Europe,' said Christian Delpeuch, president of the CIVB (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux).
The risk of isolation within Europe was a reccurring theme. Jean-Guillaume Prats of second growth Château Cos d'Estournel, voiced this concern: 'I'm afraid that a No vote will give a negative image of France in Europe which will be passed on to French wines.'
A number of wine professionals said a positive effect of a Yes vote would be clarification of the laws covering French wine production.
Yves d'Amécourt, winegrower and secretary general of the Syndicat des Bordeaux et Bordeaux Supérieur, said, 'I'm counting on the European Parliament to simplify the legislation on things like labelling (with the mention of grape variety for AC wines) as it will be covered by European rather than French laws.'
Another yes voter, Patrick Bernard of mail order specialist Millésima, said if the Constitution gained popular approval there would be more control over the European Commission and some of its more puzzling projects in the viticultural sector.
Florence Cathiard at Smith-Haut-Lafitte in the Graves said, 'I'm going to vote yes on Sunday – when you get on a boat, you don't jump off the gangway.'
She suggested there would be one positive aspect to a No vote – it would cause a devaluation of the Euro.
'Bordeaux is going through quite a few problems at the moment, one of which is the strong Euro which is not helping sales abroad. Although there are many bigger reasons for the crisis, it is still a factor. A No vote would be disappointing but it would help wine sales in that it would probably result in the Euro losing its strength.'
She added, 'It would be scant consolation though.'
Others consider that the impact of either outcome is impossible to divine. Patrick Jestin, director general of major Bordeaux negociants Dourthe, put it succinctly: 'Frankly, I don't see any negative or positive points from either a Yes or a No vote. I think our future is more in our hands.'

Your predictions did not come through but the good news for French wine enthusiasts: the dollar gained in value and Europe and European products are becoming a little bit more affordable.
Cheers,
Gerhard
