Dear all,
let me shortly introduce myself - my name is Felix Weller and I live and work in Stuttgart, Germany for a well known car maker ;-)
I discovered wine through friends, which already had quite some knowledge and stock, always willing to share both which I really appreciated... but for me, in order to learn about wine, there is nothing like driving to the vineyards, "tasting" the surrounding and bringing home the memory along with the wine. So I started off in South Africa, visiting Morgenhof, Stellenzicht, Kaapzicht and Rust en Vrede; I really enjoyed the Kaapzicht Pinotage/Steytler Pinotage as well as the ReV Tinta Barocca - so as you can see, I am more into the barrique wines with quite some volume.
During my last trip to Tuscany I had the chance to visit two wineries from which I'd like to share my impression and let you know which wines I liked best:
Fattoria Emilio Marengo: quite small winery, but very nice contact. Most of the wines are from 2000 and 2001; thus quite young for a Chianti but nevertheless already opened up. My favourite was the La Commenda Riserva (which, however, is a 1998) which I found very balanced and rich. Also check out

Castello di Volpaia: unbelievably pittoresque situation between Radda and Gaiole in Chianti, wine is sold in a joint enoteca in the "center" of the village. The Chianti Classico 2003 is still affordable and the (due to the hot summer) already intensive fruity taste lets you only guess what this wine can do in a couple of years...
Well, I hope I didn't bore you to death - let me know if you have any opinion on the above mentioned wines!
Best regards,
Felix Weller
