Found on the (french) Economic Intelligence "L'entreprise face aux réseaux sociaux" forum, an interesting contribution by a specialist and forum moderator, working for the french Company ORANGE (France Telecom Group), regarding an interesting article found on the blog of the NETRAGARD Company / SNOSOFT Research Team (specialist in anti-hacking). This article shows how to use social networks - including the creation of "dummy" users, to perform intrusion into systems and othe attacks based on social engineering. Quite an amount of time has elapsed since Kevin MITNICK's books ("the art of deception" / "the art of intrusion") have been written, yet the techniques covered by these opuses have been in the meantime adapted to the modern "web 2.0" interactive networking platforms. In short : beware of social networks. Things there are not always what they seem to be. Always first check (and cross-check) the real identity of your "friends" and contacts ! Also make sure that your corporate security policies resp. training programs take these new threats into account !

So, go there, read, and enjoy (or get scared !).
The interesting thing, in my point of view, is not so much the technology deployed as the fact that "as old as mankind" social engineering techniques based on deception tactics as well as collective and individual psychology have gained considerable momentum and efficiency since combined with social networking on the web.
Comments welcome.
