Hello Everyone,
Over the last few years the traditional thinking about innovation has been turned on its head. We used to assume that innovation was driven by access to the most advanced tools and resources. But the emphasis has shifted more recently to the role that scarcity plays in driving innovation. This change has inspired a newfound belief that innovation will emerge from the bottom up, out of developing markets, as opposed to being exported by rich nations like the U.S. and Japan.

Hello Everyone,
National Geographic Channel (NGC) is all set for a nationwide quest to discover India's most innovative and creative ideas with Yamaha - Shaping the Future series. The second edition of the Global Innovation Index in 2008 ranked India 41 in the Top 130 list of the world's Most Innovative Countries.
The channel has roped in a few leading institutes of India to participate in the hunt by inviting teams of students to submit their innovative ideas focusing on environment, technology, human issues and re-engineering.
Rajesh Sheshadri, senior vice-president, content and communication, National Geographic Channel India, says, "We believe that the innovation potential of India is immense and that much of it remains untapped and hidden. The real endeavour of the programme is to unearth this and to also provide a relevant platform that showcases India as an innovation powerhouse."

Hello Everyone,
Today, Harvard Business Review published “How GE is Disrupting Itself,” which dives into the radical way in which GE is using what the company calls “reverse innovation” to rapidly accelerate growth in global and emerging markets. Co-authored by GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt; GE’s chief innovation consultant Vijay Govindarajan, who is Professor of International Business and director of the Center for Global Leadership at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth; and Chris Trimble, who is also on the faculty of Tuck and a consultant with GE; the in-depth analysis explains how GE is literally reversing its traditional business model.
Rather than follow its historical path of developing high-end products and adapting them for emerging markets, GE is developing local technologies in these regions and then distributing them globally. To kick-off our three-part series, GE Reports presents the first of two podcasts by Vijay Govindarajan — as well as a full copy of the Harvard Business Review article, which is available via a free download in the middle of this page.

Hello Everyone,
A joint Europe-India study conducted on innovative research and development in information and communication technologies (ICT) has showed that companies based in India are not taking advantage of their innovations properly, along with their customers and clients, in order to place themselves higher in the value chain.
Besides, the joint study found that the collaborations that the India-based companies embark on are short-term-oriented and also that these companies, as a rule, team up only with their immediate customers.
The 2008-09 study sampled specific data on ICT innovation and R & D from over 200 Indian companies, representing nearly half of a sample of 382 ICT innovative companies from all over India, and identified through an array of public channels.

Hello Everyone,
In the second decade of the 21st century, it is imperative that governments increase the quality of life for their citizens, and companies drive sustainable, profitable growth to compete effectively in the global economy. They do this through innovation.
Innovation is critically important but is it clear what innovation is? It can be many things: Doing things differently, thinking out of the box, coming up with new ideas and products, taking risks, being creative. The ability of an organisation to innovate is not only a function of processes and tools but also the organisation’s culture and stakeholder behaviour. It is easy to see why innovation is misunderstood.
There’s a commonly held belief that innovation and R&D investment are linked. This is a myth. There are companies which do not invest in R&D but are very innovative. Examples include Southwest Airlines (now the largest airline in the world based on the number of passengers flown), Walmart and Virgin Group. There are companies that have made huge investments in R&D and have little to show for it. Examples include Ford and GM. Both companies were the largest investors in R&D at their peak, investing Rs 36,000 crore a year. Investment in R&D and technology enables innovation; it is not an innovation metric.
The best example is Apple. Most would agree Apple is the most innovative company in the world. Its products are very appealing, deliver great value and are user-friendly — the iPod, iPhone and the new tablet, rumour has it, iSlate. Does Apple invest heavily in R&D? No. Apple uses technology from multiple sources to enable the innovative lines of products and services that it produces.
There are at least eight forms of innovation being practised globally today: Customer-centric, disruptive, management, open, outcome-driven, radical, strategic, and value. The three most widely adopted forms are: Disruptive, open and value innovation.

Hello Everyone,
Innovation is the new mantra for the development of India and is undoubtedly the need of the hour, exhorted D Puraneshwari, Union minister of state for human resources development (HRD) at Manipal on Saturday. She was delivering the 24th annual convocation of T A Pai Management Institute(TAPMI),Manipal.
She said ideas should be converted into innovation and youth of the country should imbibe the spirit of innovation. "Like the freedom movement of the pre-independence era, a new movement on innovation should be kicked off. But in the quest for innovation, we should not forget our roots. Innovation process and results should be people centric and should have human face. Knowledge without innovation has no value and India has a great potential for growth in the coming years", she said.

Hello Everyone,
Much before Professor Nitin Nohria takes over as the tenth dean of the hallowed Harvard Business School on July 1, he will be hosting a conference. The Harvard Business Review blog is, in fact, abuzz in the run-up to the meet which will probably have some critical takeaways for Nohria himself, as he is taking over in a leadership in action role at a time when business education is at an inflection point.
The way forward for him and for HBS would be a sharper focus on innovation around the world and ideas that are developed by companies faced with real problems. “We are chasing knowledge and ideas around the world—in India, Brazil, China, Europe and also in America,” says Nohria.
Like him, the entire community of business education providers in the US today is focused on innovation and leadership around the world, at a time when the world’s largest economy is itself emerging out of a recession. “The lessons from the last eighteen months have been about rethinking the business education curriculum.
