Why is Hyderabad, one of world's best cities for innovation?
    Hello Everyone,

You can see it in their stats and in their cityscapes: These 12 Fast Cities around the globe are thriving. We'll be watching these nodes of creativity and innovation this year and beyond -- we're expecting big business and big things.

"Cyberabad" it may be, but Andhra Pradesh's capital is more diverse than rival Indian IT hub Bangalore. Home to development centers for Microsoft, Accenture, and IBM, it also has strong pharma and aviation sectors, plus a new international airport.

Re^5: Deloitte & their Innovative approach to spot leaders
    Hello Everyone,

    Forward thinking...

Global management and consultancy firm Deloitte has come up with an innovative approach to spot leaders for new projects through what it calls ‘The Maverick’ approach.

Thousands of the associates of the company across seniority and areas of functions — human resources, tax, technology and management – get a chance to work on select cases, which may not be their traditional work area.

They come up with ideas which are tangential in nature and unconventional in thought. The mavericks among them get chosen to work on projects, according to Mr Hari Kumar, Principal at Deloitte Consulting.

Mr Hari Kumar told Business Line the concept was about being innovative and thinking differently and coming up with ideas on live case studies that range from the Orange’s entry into India, The Accor Group, Dell or Samsung.

“Being a privately-held entity our approach to business has always been different. We are not always bothered about numbers and yet we continue to grow much faster than the peers in the industry. In spite of tough times, we have managed to grow our revenues to $28 billion from $18-20 billion in 2002-2003,” he explained.

Re^7:India can produce world-class innovation: Prof. Sadagopan
    Hello Everyone,

Bangalore: In the recent few years, India has made rapid progress in the arena of research and development, but the real question arises; is India capable of creating the next Google or Microsoft? Professor Sadagopan, Founder Director of International Institute of Information Technology (IIT), Bangalore, believes that India has the potential to produce world-class innovation, and initiatives such as Cloud 20/20 technical paper contest by Unisys will help in challenging and inspiring budding innovators to come up with revolutionary concepts.

Launched in October 2009, the cloud 20/20 contest aims at catalyzing innovation in cloud computing. Almost 1500 submissions were received from more than 570 engineering colleges across the country. Deepak Karunakaran from IIIT, Bangalore was awarded the first prize for his topic 'Optimizing Workloads for Cloud Computing', and Kiran GVR from IIIT, Hyderabad and Karthik Sankar from National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli were runner-ups. Bob Supnik, Vice President, Engineering and Supply Chain and Chief Technology Officer, Unisys Technology, Consulting and Integration Solutions, who was one of the jury members of cloud 20/20 contest, said, "We are overwhelmed by the phenomenal response and the high quality of abstracts submitted by the student community in India."

Re^8:Reddy formula -25 years of a robust, healthy way of doing business..
    Hello Everyone,

If a shareholder had invested about Rs 2,500 in Dr Reddy's Laboratories through the IPO in August 1986 and the rights issue of 1989, what do you think the holding would be worth today? A whopping Rs 40 lakh!

This is the calculation from Dr K. Anji Reddy, founder Chairman of the Hyderabad-based pharma major, which clocked a turnover of Rs 6,940 crore in its 25th year.

How has Reddy — a researcher, developer and, later, first-generation entrepreneur — been able to build such an impressive drug and pharma company which employs over 10,000 people and delivers good returns regularly?

“People thought I had quit from Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Ltd (IDPL) to be on my own but it proved incorrect,” says Reddy, seated at his corporate office in Hyderabad, recalling the long and eventful journey that shaped the company, launched with a seed capital of Rs 32 lakh, into a pharma behemoth.

Reddy is happy to be one of the driving forces in transforming the Indian pharma industry from a major importer of drugs to a global supplier of life-saving bulk drugs.

Re^9:Africa, India to boost agricultural technology cooperation
    Hello Everyone,

Africa and India will boost cooperation in agricultural technologies for smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a view to achieving food security by 2015.

The Hyderabad-based International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the European Market Research Centre (EMRC) this month, to facilitate ICRISAT's participation in two key annual Africa business forums organised by the EMRC - the Africa agri-business forum and the Africa finance and investment forum.

The MoU was signed at a meeting of the Africa–India economic mission earlier this month (28 February — 5 March) in Hyderabad. Twelve African countries, including Burkina Faso, Kenya, Mali, Niger and Sudan, took part in the meeting whose agenda included agricultural equipment, research, soil and water conservation, bio-fuels, post-harvest management and knowledge parks.

"We have to keep in mind the interests of the smallholder farmer, and this technology-based partnership should benefit the poorest of the poor," ICRISAT director-general William Dar told the meeting.
