my name is Steffen and I'm from Berlin. My grandparents were born in Poland, my sister in law is from the US, my parents in law came from Russia and my friends live all over the world. To every birthday-party I meet people living outside their homecountries and more than once I heard "How do we tell our kids that we are about to move again?", "It's nice that my husband has a new job in Dubai but what about me?" or "It's great to live in a castle in the Emirates but you know: I could scream at the walls, knowing that my wife and kids live in another part of the world!"
Some similar concerns told families in my systemic therapy sessions and I realized, that solvable problems with isolation, different expectations, fears, stress and so on often occur like patterns in those moving or multicultural families. Even further - foreign assignments are often ineffective or cancelled because of family problems. Companies often care about their high potentials and forget the families. So my partners and I designed a preventive training and tailored family counseling for expats. By changing perspectives, working with short term aims, involving the whole family in planning, sharing experiences with others and other little changes our client-families often gained a great time abroad.
