About me

We own a wilderness vacation resort in northern Ontario Canada that is only accessible by train or float plane. We provide excellent opportunities to enjoy soft adventure in the Canadian wilderness, view wildlife like moose and black bear, fish for Walleye and Northern Pike, canoe, kayak and explore Canada's boreal wilderness. We are on a secluded island on Lake Wabatongushi (White Sand Lake in Native Ojibway), 206 miles or 337 km north of Sault Ste Marie Ontario Canada.

You can read some of our guest's reviews about our resort on TripAdvisor hosted on our website at http://www.WildernessIsland.com/guest/reviews.html.

My wife and I have 2 children, a 14 year old son and an 11 year old daughter. I am second generation in this business and have been in our family business since I was 15 years old. I will be 50 this year and have done a lot of stuff. Was heavily involved in skiing both cross country and downhill, including working in a ski shop for many years in my teens and twenties. I was in the Canadian Ski Patrol for almost 15 years, two years as a pro patroller and two years as vice president of on trail training for the Canadian Ski Patrol cross-country division. I was also a CANSI certified professional cross country ski instructor for a few years and did a fair bit of cross country ski racing. I enjoyed racing but was always more interested in skiing in a social environment. It always amused me when I would go on a loppet and my friends would race to the finish as fast as they could while I would find some people who needed help and support, usually girls, and take my time and enjoy the day. We were all fast skiers but I think I was a smarter skier and had a lot more fun. My wife knows I did this because it was kind of how I met her. She was a downhill patroller, I was patrol leader of a large cross country ski resort and I was always recruiting downhill patroller and teaching them cross country, especially girls. We have been together for 20 years now. We don't live at our reosrt year round. In the winter we move south to Batchawana Bay which is about 45 minutes north of Sault Ste Marie on the northeast shore of Lake Superior.

I don't cross country ski as much as I would like right now, been busy, and my wife and kids like downhill more, it is easier. I get a little bored with downhill so I mostly telemark. I used to do a lot of climbing and now that my kids are old enough I am starting to teach them and get into it again. I also like canoeing and kayaking.

Besides running our resort, I have also been president of the nature and outdoor tourism industry of the province of Ontario Canada for the past 4 years. This is an 80 year old organization called NOTO (Nature & Outdoor Tourism Ontario) http://www.NOTO.net. Tourism politics is challenging in both Ontario and Canada. Unfortunately there is a lot of attitude that Canada is all about digging up rocks or oil and cutting down trees so tourism is viewed as something you do until you get a real job digging or cutting. I love tourism, it was a great way to grow up. For over 35 years I have been meeting and talking to all different kinds of people from all over the world. The breadth of perspective is incredible.

I also own the domain http://www.Kanada.com which is the germanic spelling of Canada. I have played with it for a few years and do OK with Google ads. This past year I decided to get serious with it and am currently doing a significant development of it with some partners. We hope to have something very interesting launched by late this fall.

Our internet connection is 2-way satelite with xplornet. It is not particularly fast but stable and an awful lot better than trying by dial up through radio phone. Try to imagine sometimes taking up to half an hour to nurse a single webpage change into our website. I like the internet and enjoy working on our websites, but I have never had the time to get really good at it. But I love learning and challenges, both of which the internet and websites supply in abundance.

I love living in the wilderness. It has it's challenges but the living environment is incredible.

Have a Good Day!
Al Errington
