I do believe that most would identify me as someone who is secular and who has libertarian leanings.. For what it is worth..I was born of immigrant Polish parents and English is my second language as I only spoke Polish at home and until entering school was unaware that English was 'the language' spoken in the United States.
I firmly believe in the separation of church and state... I do not believe that any religious group should dominate.. or influence any government to the detriment of any secular or religious group.
I believe that fundamentally as a citizen of this wonderful world I have an obligation that I wish was shared in kind by all...and that is:
"I would die to defend your right to be free to believe whatever it is you believe and you have an obligation to die defending my right to believe what I believe even if that happens to differ from your beliefs.."
As far fetched as it is to believe that could happen.....If the above variation of the golden rule were truly embraced by our global citizenship we could bridge the gap that divides us all.
So if I happen to be a humanist everyone in this world should be prepared to die defending my right to be one....as I am prepared to die defending everyone else's right to be gay, to be Christian, to be Jewish, to be Muslim, to be Wicca, to be Druid...
and...yes I do understand the gaps in benevolence that my own counrtry's forefathers had in sending smallpox infected blankets to 'deal with' our native "savages", and the self-serving definition of representative government that allowed the counting of women and slaves as part of the congressional district while our forefathers totally disregarded the same individuals as a voting, free constituency....It is in understanding and admitting our past mistakes and flaws from which originates our non-dogmatic ability to improve and grow as a nation and a peer member of the global community...It is the inability to admit our historical flaws that leads to the polarization, arrogance and division that affects this great nation and the global community...
I believe the fundamental problem we are suffering through is in the way individuals wish to impose upon our collective culture and society specific behaviors according to the specific dictates of their non-secular beliefs.... Neither the fundamentalist Christians nor Muslims should have fear of the secularists forcing them to marry same gender partners but the fundamentalist (code word - family values) are interested in legislating the behavior on individuals who in fact are naturally guaranteed the ability to live their life according to their own beliefs....
For example, on the issue of gay marriages...Constitutionally we as a secular country have no business being in the marriage business...Our various individual religious affiliations should be responsible for the issue of what a marriage is... In the secular world the states or the federal government should define the legal contract that exists between the willing parties to an agreement be that a union or whatever...
Of course I do cynically believe that social issues often get bought off by the false promise of low taxes and the effective propaganda machines deployed by various political parties globally...I too am a fiscal conservative and know that I respond emotionally to the promise of fair taxation and the categorization of freeloaders being supported by the liberals....so I am not personally guiltless in this process....but I am not ready to sell my freedoms too cheaply either....;-)
The bottom line is that I am truly fearful of the agenda based on imposing "family values" on everyone.... If it were truly a non-ambiguous code word for everything from sincere to evil intentions....Having studied history I am concerned that the fears we all share concerning "terrorism" are so easily perverted by those with fascist intentions that frankly we need to keep a little bit of a watchful eye open....
