About me
A lady went to the authorities to renew her driver license. The clerk asked about her actual profession. She was hesitating where to rank herself.
“I mean”…said the clerk …”do you have a job or just…?”
“Naturally, I do have a job!” answered really angry the lady…”I’m a mother”
“We don’t have category `mother` as profession. The homemaker would cover that” said the clerk politely.
I already forgot this story, till one day I got in same situation at the city hall. A really careerist lady was the clerk. She worked so self-confident and had such a well sounding title like “Clerkly interviewer” or “Alderman”.
”What is your profession?” asked me. I don’t know why I said this. It just came out of my mouth.
“I work on the field of children developing and human relationships as core searcher”
The clerk stopped making the momentary work she’s ball-pen stopped in the air. She looked up to me as she would not hear well.
I repeated my title slowly, accentuating the most essential words. Than I saw surprisedly how she wrote all this on the questionnaire.
“May I ask,” said the lady enquiringly, “what do you fairly do on this field?” Almost was hearing from outside as I said coolly, without any tension in my voice:
“I do participate on continuous research (which mum is not?) so in laboratory, as in the field.(normally I would have said inside and outside) I work for my superior (firstly for the Lord, than for my family), and I have already three credits as well(two girls and a boy) Naturally the activities related to my work require the most of thoughtfulness from all ‘people-profession’(which mum is negate this?) and very often work more than 14 hours (rather 24) At this work there is more challenge than at any other ‘common’ professions. The reward is rather the satisfaction than the money.”
I could feel how the appreciation constantly grew in her voice as she was filling the questionnaire. She accompanied me personally to the door.
As I was driving home, my new bright career was in my mind. My 15 and 11 and years old laboratory assistants were waiting for me at home. I heard our new (6 years old) tentative model of our children-developing program, trying his voice samples.
I felt like I hit the bureaucracy a blow. An official memorandum was made about me and about a by bureaucracy better accepted profession. “Another mother” or “motherhood” yet does not sound well. It’s a really superb career, especially when you have this title on the door.
Is this advancing grandmothers to ‘master researcher’ on field children developing and human relationships and grand-grand mothers to ‘supervisors of the master researcher ‘ by chance?
I think: YES!!!! I think also that grand-aunt should be advanced to assistants of the master researcher!!!!"
It would be nice you would tell this all mothers you know, grandmothers, and grand-aunts too.
oh and I have to say ...all this above is not quite about me (though it could be my story as well) I got it in a mail...and translated it for you with a bit of changes...
I’m really proud being a mum of three kids…though I do a bit more too…I'm the co-owner and leader of a company in Hungary, I work full time job for a company in Zürich.
