About me

A protégé and colleague of famed business cycle pioneer Geoffrey H. Moore, Lakshman Achuthan understands the immense impact of surprise shifts in the economy. As the co-founder and Chief Operations Officer at the Economic Cycle Research Institute (ECRI) in New York, he helped to implement a forecasting framework to predict business cycles that aid investment managers, government policymakers and business executives on six continents. Lakshman Achuthan worked extensively with Dr. Moore, whom former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan reportedly consulted before making key decisions. Mr. Achuthan and Dr. Moore worked together for five years at the Center for International Business Cycle Research at Columbia University before the two men co-founded ECRI in 1996 with Anirvan Banerji.

The Managing Editor of ECRI’s forecasting publications, Lakshman Achuthan oversees the International Cyclical Outlook, a report on inflation and growth in 20 economies and the U.S. Cyclical Outlook, which covers all major economic sectors in the U.S. He directs ECRI Weekly Updates as well, presenting advanced outlooks on the other reports. A member of Time magazine’s Board of Economists, Mr. Achuthan co-authored, with Mr. Banerji, Beating the Business Cycle: How to Predict and Profit from Turning Points in the Economy. The book, written in straightforward language, explains the value of forewarning even a mild recession, the unreliability of economic models in this regard, and what actually takes place during cyclical shifts.

For 20 years, Lakshman Achuthan has built on the pioneering work of his mentor, advancing the art and science of business cycle forecasting, making the unforeseen more predictable, to the delight of clients. Prior to joining Dr. Moore at Columbia University, he completed an M.B.A. in International Business at Long Island University. At Fairleigh Dickinson University, Mr. Achuthan earned a B.S. in Economics and Finance. A Trustee on the Board of Directors of the Atlantic Foundation and The Putney School, he also serves on the Advisory Board of Wroxton College and the Board of Governors of the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College.
