  • Load Management - Core challenge of the Smart Grid

    As a architect at Landis+Gyr, I am responsible for the research and development related to Load Management, i.e., autonomous switching of devices to keep the energy consumption within the (smart) grid within certain boundaries. This includes strategies for load scheduling, ripple-control and/or power-line communication mechanisms and data management for smart grids.

    With the increasing generation of energy through renewable sources (PV, water, wind...), the production of energy becomes more volatile. To avoid blackouts, production and consumption must be kept in balance which is more and more challenging with energy production depending on the wind and the sun. Developing systems that automatically and autonomously control thousands of electrical consumers and producers is the main part of my work at Landis+Gyr. This includes research collaborations, e.g., with the ETH Zürich, to develop the next generation of load management algorithms.

    Previously, I was employed as a researcher at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT; formerly known as University of Karlsruhe). The focus of my research were and still are highly distributed information systems, e.g., sensor networks and peer-to-peer systems, and processing queries in such systems. Other research interests include geographical information systems, (wireless) communication protocols and embedded systems (sensor nodes, smart meters...).
