German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) - Up to 20 % TAX INCENTIVE

Of particular interest for feature film production is the new German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), in operation since January 1, 2007 with an annual volume of 60 million euros available for the next three years. This tax credit scheme provides for a non-repayable grant reimbursing up to 20 per cent of qualifying production costs spent in Germany. Feature films with a minimum production budget of 1 million euros, as well as documentary (min. 200.000 euros) and feature-length animation films (min. 3 million euros) with confirmed theatrical distribution in Germany have access to this scheme. The maximum grant available per film is 4 million euros (in selected cases also up to 10 million
euros). One condition for receiving this grant is that at least 25 per cent of the total production budget is spent in Germany and that the production fulfils a so-called “cultural test” based on an automatic point system. Producers based in Germany or who have a registered office in Germany may apply. Producers based outside of Germany may access the DFFF through a German co-producer and combine this grant with existing regional and federal film funding. Bavaria Film has the necessary track record and expertise as a co-production partner to maximise benefits of producing in Germany, including the DFFF tax credit.
