About me
Objective:
Fixing things, currently the lack of broadband in rural Ireland.
System Experience:
Anything from small ARM and MIPS based embedded boards to big OpenMosix or LVS clusters. Preferable Linux, but I'll find my way around pretty much anything including Solaris, BSD or Windows (if I'm forced to do it !!).
Current Projects:
Airwire - Entrepreneur, Technical Manager, MD - Regional irish ISP
TuxBox - Entrepreneur - Freelance Consulting in telecommunications and computer networks, specificly VoIP and wireless. Pretty much anywhere in the world, if needed.
Work Experience:
April 2006 to present - Airwire, Co. Galway, Ireland
Airwire is an ISP that aims to provide broadband and IP telephony, initially in the rural areas of Co. Galway, Clare and Mayo. Our distribution network has mainly been established in Co. Galway so far and we're as of mid 2007 serving around 500 customers with symmetric and unmetered broadband services. The company provides broadband and telephony via wireless micowave links using industry standard equipment.
March 2006 to November 2006 - TuxEnergy Ltd., also trading as Mandriva Ireland in Skibbereen, Co. Cork, Ireland
Mandriva Ireland has hired me as Project Manager for customer focused Asterisk projects. These are specifically designed solutions for individual customers, that are implemented based on a case by case basis that I mainly work with.
April 2005 to May 2006 - blue tree systems Ltd. in Galway/Ireland
blue tree systems employs me as IT Systems and Support Engineer. The company works with data aquisition and telematics for the transport branch. Originally the customer base were temperature controlled vehicles equiped with refridgeration units from Thermo King, but ever since the product range has been expanded to cover complete fleet management and tracking. Data is automatically transferred via wireless short range transmitters operating in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, once a vehicle arrives at the warehouse or can optionally be retrieved via gsm/gprs while on the road. My job covers support for distributors and selected customers, system administration for the internal IT infrastructure, on-site verification of customer installations and training of customers and dealerships, test of software and pre-production units, before they are released into the marked. The area that I cover is worldwide, but primarily Europe and Northern America.
March 2005 to August 2006 - Bransholm & Blæsbjerg A/S in Vejle/Denmark
I maintain the serverpark for Bransholm & Blæsbjerg A/S consisting of servers based on Linux in 3 locations in Denmark. This job is done remotely from Ireland, since I usually don't need physical access to the servers. Brandholm & Blæsbjerg A/S is specialized in Internet marketing via email & banners.
January 2004 - Dell Direct in Cherrywood/Dublin/Ireland
As of January 2004 I transferred to the Dell EMEA Enterprise Expert Centre. My work as a Senior Analyst with Dells Gold and Platinium Contract customers covers all of the EMEA region. The EEC delivers this service 24x7, 365 days a year, so my working hours varied quite a bit. Originally I primarily worked with servers and smaller tape units, transferred later to the TBU team, which specialises in tape robots (Benchmark, HP, ADIC, StorageTek), SAN integration in EMC and Clariion SANs and software for these, but I also touched other parts of Dells enterprise products now and then.
October 2002 to January 2004 - Dell AB in Stockholm/Sweden
In 2002 I was hired as Senior Server Technician at Dell AB (the Nordic part of Dell Corp.), supporting customers in the Enterprise branch of the company. This is mostly troubleshooting of hardware, software problems, consulting customers in technical product questions and dispatching parts and an on-site technician, if necessary. The customers I did support where based in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. Dell's Mission Statement : To deliver the best customer experience in the markets we serve.
February 2002
Freelance development for different companies developing payment solutions (with online/dial-up credit-card processing), installing and maintaining Linux servers and implementing cellular content services.
April 2001 - embedded wireless devices inc. in Pleasanton CA/USA and Horsens/Denmark
ewd was a startup semiconductor company developing embedded wireless telephony and network products. My first assignment was Linux/Unix specialist for the whole company and network administrator plus helpdesk for the Danish subsidiary. I was later promoted to corporate-wide system and network administrator. This also included a lot of traveling between Denmark and the USA. The network was mostly based on Windows 2000 workstations and servers with some Linux and Sun Solaris machines. For firewall and vpn we used Checkpoint solutions. Due to a lack of funding, ewd unfortunatly was bankrupted by mid 2002.
November 2000 - Portaltjenesten A/S in Vejle/Denmark
Portaltjenesten A/S develops and hosts online community portals based on PHP and Javascript. Hosting is done on Linux servers (Debian and SuSE) and Oracle or mySQL is used for the SQL backend. For a dating portal the traffic got so high, I had to implement a web-clustering solution.
June 2000 - Exitec AG in Flensburg/Germany
Exitec AG develops online communities, mainly targeted to reality TV shows (Big Brother, Temptation Island etc.). I was hired as web developer and backup for the system administrators (internet services, internal network, Linux technical support for co-workers, consulting on telephony services). The whole community toolbox is developed in PHP and JavaScript and hosted on a Linux cluster solution with mySQL/Linux and MS-SQL/Windows 2000 SQL back ends (different databases for different needs).
January 2000 - Call Center Europe A/S in Sønderborg/Denmark
Call Center Europe A/S is Denmark's largest call center. Major owner is TDC, the former monopoly Telco in Denmark. My job was support and sales by telephone for different customers (Acer Computers, etc.). This was done in Danish, English and German. I worked there until September 2000.
February 1999
Together with Plomus (
February 1997 - interCom danmark aps (later TelePassport A/S) in Kolding/Denmark
TelePassport A/S was a Telco, providing telephony, cellular and internet services, backbone and telephony equipment. I was hired as Technical Development Manager with the responsibility of establishing an internet service provider. I also had the network administrator and support function for internet and telephony related products until two additional system administrators were hired. After having started the ISP business up, the next step was deploying own telephony infrastructure, where we mainly had subrented traffic through other backbone providers initially.
May 1995 - Datascan in Vester Sottrup/Denmark
Datascan is a computer shop and consulting company. My job was assembly and installation of PCs, setup of customer networks and software development in Basic, Pascal and Access. Later Datascan evolved into an Internet Service Provider.
Offtime projects:
In my spare time I work with some software projects, do talks on VoIP. Linux related subjects and preach about IPv6. I do some consulting work for ISPs and ITSPs through my own consulting company "TuxBox". I play a lot around with IP telephony and long distance wireless networks in general. When there's time left, that is spend on motorbikes, sailing, cars, reading books or just enjoying the nature, that is around me here in Ireland.
