Personal information
- Wants
- My want is very simple: I would like to change the way most organizations and most people try to improve organizational performance. Looking for speaking opportunities, to work with Leaders interested in creating a working environment where people can do their best work and looking for additional University 'Professional Education' teaching opportunities (run a session once or twice a year) on more effective ways to improve organizational performance.
- Haves
- We just received a great review from Jeffrey Liker (author of the Toyota Way) on our new book, "Escape the Improvement Trap" http://tinyurl.com/44osfyu We work with leadership teams to "improve the way they improve" which is the story in our book. We also step in to co-lead improvement teams that were previously launched....but are now struggling to accomplish their objectives. Currently teach a class at the University of Chicago's Graham School "Finding Better Ways to Work - Innovative Tools for Organizational Excellence" - professional education program
- Interests
- In general looking to work more globally and foster innovation....most fun is watching people grow as they make change happen, interested in working with cross functional teams or organizations already using improvement methodologies like lean, six sigma, baldrige...but having problems realizing the expected benefits. Would very much like to work with NGO development organizations around the world on improving effectiveness. Developing more useful performance metrics for administrative and support departments/functions....this is a challenge to do well, making sustainable change happen is always exciting. Outside of work.... family, travel, running, skiing, tennis, reading and continuing to learn, grow and see the world in new ways.

About me
We have written a couple of books. Our latest is my favorite:
1. "Escape the Improvement Trap" - a story of why most improvement initiatives fail to transform an organization's competitive position, even though the organization got better (I have a major emotional investment in this book, I believe we wrote something important....it will be interesting...or perhaps distressing...to see if anyone reads it - and more importantly acts on the information)....the problem is NOT leadership support for improvement. But there is a problem the way leaders manage/guide improvement activities. This book has received some great reviews on Amazon...check out http://tinyurl.com/44osfyu
In retrospect probably should have titled the book, "Moving Beyond the Improvement Tools - Leadership's Role"
2. Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook; McGraw-Hill, Nov. 2004
3. Six Sigma Financial Tracking & Reporting my fun title is "I Had a Million Dollars in Savings, But My P&L did not change?" December, 2005
Articles
"Six Problems with Performance Metrics"
"Lean Office"
If this fits with your journey....let's talk. We are really looking for new opportunities, where we can create new synergies.
Best wishes,
Michael Bremer
