CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Program Development
o Played key role in turning around at-risk, alienated High School students by convincing six superintendents to submit the students and associated state funding to an all-day program delivering full academic curriculum increasing average student attendance from 30% to 90%.
o Established, incorporated and served as CEO of a non-profit Foundation, which generated $2 million at its peak offering high-end technical training to local businesses.
o Earned recognition with several state and federal awards for challenging industry skepticism to set the standard for Computer Assisted Instruction in Adult High School Education, GED, ABE and ESL programs.
o Took a proactive approach to increasing revenue, customer satisfaction and repeat business by creating 20-30 new educational products as well as programs that quadrupled parental involvement and increased adult student re-enrollment.
Public Affairs/Marketing
o Developed and implemented annually recruitment plans to bring thousands of high school graduates and adults into career technical training programs and adult academic development courses.
o United 14 competitive organizations into the Silicon Valley Alliance to approach and influence state legislators with a single voice representing all vocational and adult ed programs in the county.
o Created and implemented an institutional branding program and comprehensive communications plan to transform a “best kept secret” into its premier service organization.
o Represented Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) at 24 public and private schools nationwide and overseas as Visiting Committee Chairman and vocational/adult ed representative for current accreditation process, which includes Title 4 Funding.
Organizational Change & Systems Management
o Conceived and executed the integration of separate, adversarial programs serving 70,000 students into the one career school entity, saving up to $50,000 per year by eliminating major redundancies and establishing a culture of common goals.
o Provided vision and leadership to 730 employees as the chief executive credited with securing and managing WASC accreditation and working productively with three employee bargaining units.
o Employed sound, decisive fiscal and business judgment to operate the a system of career schools with balanced budgets of up to $24 million for 16 years by making the difficult cuts and personally informing the affected parties. For sixteen years there were no audit exceptions in the annual audit report.
o Exhibited the foresight to champion inclusion of high-speed fiber optic network while leading modernization of all facilities in the mid-90s, while others doubted the competitive significance of Internet infrastructure which now supports VoIP.
o Introduced and directed development of three strategic plans to provide a clear roadmap to achieving organizational goals for improved program quality, PR, finances and internal communication.
o Rescued a career school program from the verge of bankruptcy by identifying and making necessary cuts in order to bring the organization back to full capacity with a minor profit by the end of the next year.
Fundraising/Partnerships
o Forged a valuable, long-term partnership with a local Auto Dealers' Association, which will provide the career school I led for 16 years with $80,000 worth of equipment and services per year for 10 years, by persistently presenting business benefits of creating a state-of-the-art automechanics training program.
o Built and led a highly motivated affinity-based alumni advisory group in planning and executing a solicitation strategy that raised $1.8 million in donations within 18 months for a scholarship corpus providing $80,000 in annual scholarships.
o Actively raised between $30,000 and $40,000 per year in local business sponsorships to fund five consecutive one-day career fairs for 5,000 students; program was adopted and expanded by the City of San Jose.
Public Policy Development
o Overcame significant political resistance to initiate, write and sponsor a successful bill that translated into increased funding for my prior employer of up to $200,000 per year.
o Pushed through state legislation to subsidize maintenance needs of joint powers agency facilities, which paid for a $2.5 million roof and HVAC replacement and provides over $250,000 in yearly income.
o Streamlined communication between the senior staff and the administrative team by instigating a policy and administrative regulation system specifically tailored for career schools.
