About me

I have been extremely fortunate to have had an eclectic career.

There are three main braids to my life. The first is returning to my first career. I was lucky enough to have been trained by the BBC's Film Department near the start of my editing career. At the end of the classroom epoch we raw assistants were sent on attachment around the BBC to experience all areas of its film production. After qualifying I enjoyed the last of the time when many giants stalked the circular corridors of TV Centre and other lairs.

Whilst working with such giants as Jeremy Isaacs I learned about the importance of story. This more than anything else is what governs the success or otherwise of a film. It's not a stack of events and a conclusion, it's an argument for how to deal with an issue.

In 1989 I left as the storm front of innovation I had enjoyed working in petered out in the low creative energy of management by accountants. I ran away to sea.

Sailing is something I have been involved with since before I was a child. I enjoyed a few years as a delivery skipper and race yacht navigator and was for a time a member of council of the Royal Institute of Navigation. A very romantic interlude but you can't live like that. Or can you?

I have a beautiful 1938 Gaff Ketch which serves as my go anywhere cave. She is currently about to undergo a massive refit so I am temporarily sleeping on the floor trying to keep the taproot from getting a purchase.

The third strand is to do with management systems and in particular Environmental ones. I am no tree hugger and have little in common with these emotional and spiritual types. My concern is not so much about the planet but about the future of mankind. I am trained as a lead auditor for both ISO 19001 and ISO14001 systems and believe absolutely in their capability - but only with buy-in from senior life forms.

So, with a cameraman, another editor and a journalist I have established an idea called i-catching movies where we weave stories for delivery by TV, Internet, Web, IPTV, tape and whatever shiny disc is current.
