About me

I'm Tineke Vanhove, born on 20 January 1984 and living in Belgium with my husband Geert Conard.

Professional Life

I have a bachelor's degree in legal practice (magna cum laude) which I obtained from the PHLimburg in 2006 and a master's degree in criminology (cum laude) from the K.U.Leuven. I graduated from the K.U.Leuven on 1 July 2008. I am currently working as a Claims Advisor in an international environment. This means I handle cases for foreigners who have caused damages in any sort of way in Belgium. A consequence hereof is that I use several languages on a daily basis. As a result, I speak Dutch, French, English and some German and Italian.

I also work as a legal advisor for IT Consult Services BVBA and Geert Conard VOF. In this position I handle legal requirements, but also disputes and credit control.

From time to time I translate academic and journalistic texts (freelance) regarding organized crime and mafia for an organization that battles against the threat of organized crime (SOS Legalita). My interest here was awoken by the research I did regarding the Italian mafia in Belgium. In 2008 I wrote my thesis on this subject.

The Italian Mafia in Belgium: An Invisible Threat?

With this master dissertation I have tried to give an overview of the Italian mafia in Belgium. The first chapter consists of a literature review regarding the Italian mafia-type associations in general. In the second, drawing from theories on the international ramification of the Italian mafia, I have tried to find reasons for their appearance in Belgium.

In the third chapter, the results of my empirical data collection and analysis are presented. First, I point out where exactly there are mafia implantations in Belgium. This is supplemented with an overview of the activities the Italian mafia-type associations engage in. In the fourth and final chapter, the action undertaken by the Belgian law enforcement agencies against the Italian mafia representatives active in Belgium is reviewed. The chapter begins with a summary of the Belgian legislation that can be useful in the fight against the Italian mafia. Then, the Belgian Federal Policeā€Ÿs anti-mafia project and the cooperation between Belgian and Italian law enforcement agencies are discussed. To conclude the part on fighting the Italian mafia in Belgium, an assessment is made to see whether these measures are sufficient.

The second part of the thesis (chapters three and four) is set up as a qualitative research based on interviews, a document analysis and media analysis.

Private

In my free time I'm active in several associations (political and cultural) and I love to take short trips, read and cook. A bit obsessed with books, I have to admit that my collection currently contains about 500 volumes going from classics and novels to academic literature.

My other main hobby, cooking, mainly results in lots of calories ;)

If you're interested in cooking, I suggest you have a look at my blog. I'm always looking for recipes, tips, etc. on the internet. Over the years I've found quite some information and I thought it would be a nice idea to share that with other, hence this blog. It's in dutch, but should you be interested in an article or recipe, you can always contact me for a translation!
