Coming together is a beginning.Keeping together is progress.Working together is success. First: My dealings with contact requests XING visualizes the so-called Small World phenomenon: Everyone knows everyone at least around six corners. The shorter the connection, the better! In ideal case, my contacts can directly qualify, recommend and connect to the contact. My contact becomes a reference and I will be his.
But some members have not only several hundred, but even a few thousand contacts. Can someone really know so many people? How often does he deal with these contacts, how often has he met them personally, does he appreciate them and how does he value them, what does he know of them, which is not to be found in the profile or on any other site? Sometimes, unfortunately - fairly little or nothing. Very early I made the experience, when I inquired with one of my contacts about some of his contacts: "Sorry, I do not know more than the profile provides. He offered me the contact and I accepted." What additional value beyond their Xing profile can bring those contacts? In this context, what does the word ‘ I know’ mean?
Out of this I personally came to two consequences:
1.I tie XING contacts only with people I've met personally. Personally for me is usually face to face - and more than just a handshake and three sets of small talk. Several detailed phone calls can be OK - particularly at greater geographical distance.
2. Every now and then I delete contacts with people who have too many contacts or persons to whom I have had a personal contact, but we have not adequately maintained. You think I am rude?
How to handle in practice:
I am delighted to have contact requests on the occasion of concrete opportunities for cooperation, even if we have not yet met personally: This we should soon take up. In other words: If you send me a contact request, without having met, please suggest a date for our first meeting at the same time.
EXCEPTION:
Non-premium members can not send mails only contact requests with a little text that replaces a message. That's O.K. for me. I will then interpret these as mail messages and not as a contact requests.
[Disclaimer: I thank Johannes Woll for giving me his consent to use his About Me page as a template. Please help yourself to this information, if you wish] ABOUT ME: The Contact Member of XING (formerly openBC) since end of October 2004. Power User! The wild Contactitis from the beginning is long gone, because quantity not quality. Therefore, very soon (because I'm conservative!) the desire to transform virtual contacts into real and touchable ones.
It is often at our XING meetings (sometimes leveled behind hand) that I am asked what XING has given me. I make no secret of the fact: Real customers, good relations, perhaps friends. And (here I see the greatest potential) important partners. We open up new business channels through these partnerships, we generate revenue for us and (I'm a fan of win-win situations) for others. Here I am Utilitarian.
