Dr. Winfried Meining

I am a committed, goal-orientated, self-motivating researcher with long-time experience with performing, leading and organizing research projects in the greater field of structure biology. I am strongly interested and have documented work experience in the combined application of different techniques used to determine molecular structure. My research interests span structural motility and analysis of conformational changes, ligand binding and structure based drug design, interdependence of structural rearrangements and enzymatic activity and database and software development for data mining and data analysis of macromolecular structures.
 
I was involved in numerous projects dealing with the elucidation of catalytic mechanisms of enzymes, the thermostability of proteins and the quaternary structure of proteins. In most of these projects I have been either primary researcher or joint supervisor. Many of these projects involved the analysis of ligand-binding and effects of ligands on local conformations and the overall protein structure. At numerous occasions I have developed software in order to analyze structural parameters like subunits contacts, ion pairs and contact surfaces and geometrical features like rotation parameters.
 
I have taught more than 250 hours lectures and seminars in xray crystallography, structural biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, basics of Mathematics. I was responsible for a 10 weeks course in structural biology in the years 1999-2001 and 2003.
 
I have 20+ years experience in programming in FORTRAN, C, Perl, PHP. I developed numerous applications for scientific (e.g. XtalBase) and non scientific purposes (database management, PHP utilities).
