POF unterscheidet sich von herkömmlichen Glasfasern in Material und Kern-/Mantelabmessungen.

Multimode-Fasern (MMF) verwenden typischerweise einen Kern/Mantel-Durchmesser von 50 Mikron/125 Mikron, was aufgrund der erhöhten Dispersion als Folge des Kerns mit größerem Durchmesser eine geringere Reichweite – bis zu etwa 2 km – bietet
POF hat im Vergleich zu SMF und MMF einen viel größeren Kerndurchmesser, üblicherweise 980 Mikrometer/1000 Mikrometer. Obwohl dies zu niedrigeren Datenraten (Hunderte Mb/s) und Reichweite führt, liegt der große Vorteil in den Kosten
