International School of Hamburg

Über uns

The International School of Hamburg (ISH) was founded in 1957 as the first international school in Germany. Today we are an independent, state-recognised, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from nursery right through to university qualification (ages 3 – grade 12).

ISH is proud to be an IB World School, offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme since October 1978. Our school is also proud to be accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS).

The language of instruction is English, nonetheless a multitude of languages thrive at ISH, supported through programmes offered by the Department of Modern Languages and our well-established Mother Tongue Programme. Students joining us from other nations who are non-native English speakers are supported throughout their curriculum not only by dedicated staff members but our entire student body.

Our teachers and administrators backgrounds are as diverse as our students. Faculty members come from the four corners of the globe while our 11-member Board of Directors is comprised of parents, teachers, and business people from our community.

Our school’s mission is to provide our students with an international education which seeks to develop their full potential and to foster understanding, respect for others, freedom of thought and expression, enjoyment of learning and personal responsibility.
