SUNDAE talks #2: Scaling User Experience
*This is an English-language event.*
At XING, we have one goal: Serve User Needs & Deliver Awesome Experiences - SUNDAE for short. And since we know we’re not alone, we’d like to invite you to a professional UX exchange.
In our second edition of SUNDAE talks, we bring together various speakers who share their stories and experience as designers, researchers, UX consultants and UX team leads.
This time around we’ll focus on "SCALING USER EXPERIENCE".
- What to do if your company is growing [yay!] but UX is not growing at the same rate?
- What challenges arise for UX and how do you tackle them?
- Which approaches were helpful, and which failed and why?
- How do you shape UX processes within a growing product company?
- How do you scale UX?
We’ll start with breakfast and great coffee, and round off the day with some drinks and chats. In between the talks there’ll be more coffee and a great view of the Elphie!
Six short SUNDAE talks and plenty of time for professional exchange between different companies await you.
Here's the line-up:
- Design Systems at XING: Past – Present – Future
Stephan Richter, Interaction Designer, and Daniel Guse, Senior Interaction Designer, XING AG
Let's take a look at the last couple of years where the social network XING not only grew as a company, but also in terms of mobile product development which has become increasingly important. Learn about the challenges we faced and tackled as designers in such an environment. We want to share the experiences we gathered along the way and provide some insights as to how the mobile teams at XING work with Design Systems.
- Building a Design System from Scratch
Aron Jones, avid film-watcher, design book-collector and Visual Designer, Zalando
What happens when your engineering teams grow quickly but you don’t have a scalable design system in place to keep up? One of the main challenges we face at Zalando is giving our customers a unified experience on all platforms and screen sizes. By growing a dedicated frontend dev team, creating a design system and building a shared component library, we are definitely starting to solve this problem.
- Setting up a scalable, community-owned Design System - Introducing The Brewery: XING’s Web Design System
Yan Walton, Team Lead Design, XING AG
“Master Brewers” in central teams mentor the process of “Craft Brewers” in product teams creating and contributing to an open design system for xing.com. Made to scale with the organisation and aiming to bring our web product to the small screen. I’ll show five fails from the past and five fixes for the future.
- Lessons from Hiring Product Designers at Scale
Jay Kaufmann, UX Lead - Talent & Community of Practice, Zalando
Zalando’s UX community has grown exponentially over the past couple years. As we evolve our practice maturity even further -- toward Silicon Valley standards of Product Design -- we are in the process of igniting our second phase of hiring researchers and designers at scale. We’ll share insights from this journey that will benefit any design team aiming to add both capacity and quality - at any scale. Jay has blogged extensively with hiring advice for designers and researchers. Now at SUNDAE he will gives some tips for the folks on the other end of the hiring process.
- PATTERNS AS PRODUCT or how pattern mamas and agile water slides improve your design system mojo.
Dr. Thomas Piribauer, Managing Director, and Dr. Björn Ganslandt, User Experience Consultant, intuio GmbH, Vienna
When design systems fail after they’re launched, the problem is often not of a technical nature or due to bad interaction design, but because of a lack of dedicated product management. This is by no means a simple task, given that they form the link between technical and design concerns and wire up otherwise independent teams. In this this talk we’ll share what we learned from a number of design system projects and show you how to set them up and keep them running healthily.
- Up and down and back up again - when agile shakes up existing UX structures
Franziska Becker, Guild Lead User Experience Research, ImmobilienScout24
Scaling UX isn’t simply a matter of growth as established UX departments also face the challenge of (re-)scaling their UX activities when agile organisation principles shake up existing structures. The UX team at ImmobilienScout24 has undergone a number of profound changes in the last few years. Having started out as a central, interdivisional but independent UX team in the past, we now work in a decentralised fashion as members of a UX guild that is deeply embedded in cross-functional teams. I’d like to share some insights and learnings as well as the up and downs we experienced and continue to experience while re-scaling to accommodate change.
- Scaling for the user, an example from XING E-Recruiting 360°
Alina Cvetkova, Interaction Designer, XING E-Recruiting
What happens when you have to maintain a B2B product suite consisting of 5 other products and growing all the time? How do you ensure consistency with the B2C platform as things progress? In this this talk I'll share some insights into the challenges this process involves, and how to efficiently scale and keep products consistent.
