Microsoft Outlook Connector

  • How do I install the Outlook Connector?

Please download the installer from outlook.xing.com.

After installing the feature, all you need to do is link it to your XING account from within Outlook. To do so, just click on Tools > Social Network Account settings (Outlook 2003 and 2007) or View > People Pane > Account Settings (Outlook 2010 and 2013). A menu will then appear allowing you to select and log in to XING. And that's it!

  • Why should I use the XING Connector?
The free Outlook Connector allows you to browse all of your XING contacts (including their contact details, profile photo and activity) in Outlook. On top of that, it's really quick and easy to invite your e-mail contacts to join your XING network.
  • Which version of Outlook do I need to install the Outlook Connector?
The Outlook Connector is compatible with Outlook 2003 and higher. You will need to be running Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8.
  • Do I need to reinstall the XING Connector if I install a new version of Microsoft Outlook?
No, all previous settings and contact data are retained when updating Outlook.
  • Can Microsoft access and save my XING contact data?
No, your XING contact data is only saved on your computer or within your company network. Microsoft does not process any of your data.
  • Do I have to have XING open to use the Outlook Connector?
No. Once you've installed the Outlook Connector you'll need to enter your XING login details the first time you use it. You do not need to have XING running in your browser in the background. If you change your XING password you'll also need to change it in the Outlook Connector.
  • What are contact recommendations?

Contact recommendations is an additional feature you can install alongside the Outlook Connector that helps you to expand your XING network and sync your Outlook contacts. You’ll also receive a monthly overview of people you’re not connected to on XING but are listed as Outlook contacts or sent you an e-mail at some point. You can then send those people a simple contact request to add them to your XING network.

You can also add Outlook contacts to your XING address book by allowing XING to save e-mail addresses as e-mail contacts. To do so, check the box next to “I would like XING to provide me with contact suggestions based on my address book in order to help me expand my network.” Once you’ve done that, you’ll find the addresses saved on XING in the “E-mail contacts” tab of the “Contacts” section. XING will never forward any of these imported details to third parties, and you can delete imported e-mail contacts at any time.

  • Can I automatically use the e-mail addresses from my contacts' XING profiles in Outlook?
As long as your contacts allow you to view their e-mail addresses on XING, you can use them in Outlook too.
  • Why can't I see the photo of one of my XING contacts even though I know this person has a profile photo?
In Outlook, people are assigned to their XING profiles using their e-mail address(es). If you receive an e-mail from one of your XING contacts (e.g. max@hotmail.com), Outlook will not display their XING profile data if they are registered on XING using a different e-mail address (e.g. max@yahoo.com).
  • How can I remove the XING Connector from Outlook?

To remove the Outlook Connector, click on Tools > Social Network Account Settings (Outlook 2003 and 2007) or View > People Pane > Account Settings (Outlook 2010 and 2013). After that, click on the "X" next to the XING entry to remove XING from the list of networks in use. Please note that all of the contacts and their details imported from XING into Outlook will be deleted.

If you want to uninstall the Outlook Connector, go to your Control Panel and click on "Programs and Features" and uninstall it there.

  • How do I update the Outlook Connector?

You can simply install the latest version as the new Outlook Connector will detect that you already have an older version installed and delete it first.

N.B.: You'll need to disconnect the Outlook Connector from your XING acccount before installing the latest version. Here's how to do it:

    • Outlook 2003 / 2007: Click on Tools > Social Network Account settings and unselect the X next to the XING entry.
    • Outlook 2010 / 2013: Click on View > People Pane > Account Settings and unselect the X next to the XING entry.

  • Can I manually view XING contact recommendations?
Yes. Go to the start menu in Windows and select All Programs > Accessories > System Tools followed by Task Scheduler. There, just search for and select XING Social Recommendations.
  • How can I remove the contact recommendations feature?

You can deactivate this feature by going to "More features" during the installation process and removing the check next to XING contact recommendations.

If you'd like to uninstall this feature after having installed it, go to the Control Panel in Windows and select "Programs and Features" and then install the feature from there. You will of course still have full access to the Outlook Connector.

  • Can I export my Outlook contacts to XING?

No, unfortunately that's not possible. If you installed the XING contact recommendations alongside the Outlook Connector you can add your Outlook e-mail contacts to your XING address book. The XING contact recommendations feature regularly checks your Outlook contacts and e-mail addresses for XING members you're not connected to yet. This is a simple encrypted synchronization of e-mail addresses, we do not save any addresses or contact details. You can however choose to have XING save such information by ticking the "I would like XING to provide me with contact suggestions based on my address book in order to help me expand my network" box.

XING will nevery forward imported data to third parties, and you can delete imported e-mail contacts at any time.

  • Why can I see profile photos of people I'm not even connected to on XING?
The Outlook Connector will automatically show you the profile photo and/or activity of all XING members who have made their profile page visible to non-members.
