JOB DESCRIPTION

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come.

Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love.

That’s what makes us Roche.

The Opportunity

You will join Roche’s Institute of Human Biology , an organization within Roche Pharma R&D (pRED) whose goal is to harness and advance the use of human model systems in drug discovery and development, as well as personalized medicine. Our interdisciplinary research bridges academic and pharmaceutical research, connecting biologists, engineers, and data scientists.

We are offering an outstanding opportunity for a Master's graduate to contribute directly to our mission: to disrupt the traditional drug discovery process by advancing more predictive human model systems This is a laboratory-based position within the Microtechnologies Group at the Roche Institute of Human Biology (IHB). You will actively support several core projects in the group, which involves the design of microfluidic devices and their fabrication using a variety of micro-fabrication methods.

The internship is highly hands-on and includes the crucial steps of manipulating stem cells and organoids, characterizing these devices with the cell models, and contributing to the automation and development of instrument hardware and software. You will be hosted and mentored by the Microtechnologies Group, which will guide your research and provide you with all the needed work infrastructure and a strong collaborative network.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

This is a highly hands-on, lab-based position where your tasks will include:

  • Fabricate microfluidic devices using a variety of micro-fabrication methods, and support the initial design and refinement process. You will be supporting senior members of the Microtechnologies team to develop advanced in vitro human model systems founded on these microengineering tools.

  • Conduct image acquisition using various microscopes. This includes advanced techniques as well as routine acquisition necessary to gather robust data. You will also perform quantitative image analysis.

  • Manipulate stem cells and organoids to prepare and characterize the biological performance of the developed microfluidic platforms. This involves testing the platforms developed by the group with these complex cell models.

  • Support the Microtechnologies Group by contributing to the development of new instrument hardware and software platforms used for automated fluidics and imaging.

  • Plan, design, and execute rigorous lab experiments. You will then analyze the resulting data and clearly present your findings at lab meetings.

Who You Are

Required Education: Ongoing Master's studies, or a completed Master's degree (within the last 12 months), in Bioengineering, Microengineering, Microfluidics, or a closely related technical field.

  • Direct, hands-on experience with microfabrication techniques (e.g., lithography, soft-lithography, micromilling, laser cutting).

  • Practical experience testing microfluidic devices with complex biological systems, ideally including stem cells, 3D culture models, or organoids.

  • Proficiency in using various microscopy platforms and performing quantitative image analysis.

  • Experience with CAD tools (e.g., Autocad, Fusion) and skills in software programming (e.g., Python, C) for instrument or data management.

Key Interpersonal and Professional Attributes:

  • You thrive in a dynamic environment and must be able to thrive in a multicultural, multinational environment.

  • You are resourceful, flexible in problem-solving, and adept at supporting several projects simultaneously across different technical areas.

  • You possess outstanding communication skills and can work well both within a group and independently.

  • Demonstrate a strong passion for research and technology.

time commitment. Applicants currently pursuing or already holding a PhD are not eligible.

The position is available immediately. P lease submit the following required documents:

  • Your CV , it should list the projects to which you contributed during your M.Sc. and clearly highlight your specific contributions to each project or publication.

  • A comprehensive Cover Letter indicating at least one reference.

  • A separate, complete List of Projects and Publications .

In accordance with Swiss regulations , non-EU/EFTA citizens must provide a certificate from their university confirming that the internship is a mandatory part of their degree program, including the required length of the internship. Additionally, they must remain enrolled for the entire duration of the internship.
