The GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt operates one of the world's leading particle accelerator facilities for scientific research. The new FAIR ( F acility for A ntiproton and I on R esearch) facility, one of the largest research projects worldwide, is currently being built in international cooperation. We are looking for the Department "Safety & Radiation Protection (SRP)” , Group "Accelerator Radiation Protection (ARP)” , for a
Scientific-technical employee / Software Developer (all genders)
Reference Number: 25.130-9200
as an EPICS SCADA Software Developer – Monitoring Control and Data Acquisition in Radiation Protection.
Your tasks:
- Driver Development: Implement EPICS device support and interface drivers for new and existing measurement equipment to be used for Radiation Monitoring system of FAIR.
- System Architecture Design: Define and implement the architecture for real-time data acquisition, control integration, and seamless storage in dedicated databases.
- Visualization & Operator Interfaces: Implement, integrate and develop interactive graphical user interfaces and visualization dashboards for system monitoring and control.
- Data Handling and Archiving: Enable robust data logging, archiving, and querying solutions using time-series or relational databases.
- Team Collaboration: Collaborate closely with hardware developers, system integrators, physicists, other EPICS developers, local and world-wide to align software functionality with experimental and operational needs.
- Documentation: Document all aspects of the system, from architecture to deployment, ensuring maintainability and adaptability.
Your qualifications and skills::
- University degree (Master) in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or related technical field or a comparable qualification
- Hands-on experience with the EPICS control system
- Proficient in C/C++ and Python for control system development
- Working knowledge of Linux and real-time systems
- Experience in integrating hardware via standard protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, RS232, SCPI)
- Familiarity with Git or other version control systems
- Understanding of tools like InfluxDB and Grafana
- Outstanding organisational and communication skills
- Ability to work in a team and also independently
- Fluent in written and spoken English (German language skills desirable)
