Postdoc (f/m/x)
(40 hours per week)
with an emphasis on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Focused Ion Beam (Ga and Xe FIB) sample preparation. Academy Scientists (Post-docs) generally work to the specifications of advanced scientists at the institute, are involved in long-term research projects, and/or work closely with technicians in interface functions. They bring their scientific qualifications with in-depth understanding of methods and, if necessary, expand this with regard to the specific research needs of the institute.
Your Tasks
- The successful candidate will be part of an international team whose research activities focus on the in-depth microstructure and chemical characterization of various material systems using TEM and FIB-based methods.
- Assist training new users on the TEM and FIB instruments and related methods (4D-STEM, cryo-preparation, in-situ testing, etc.), trouble-shooting problems that arise upon operation of the microscopes, develop new experimental setups based on scientific needs and lead instrument maintenance.
- Involvement in the writing of new proposals that facilitate equipment within your responsibility and support users when necessary.
- Enhance your scientific career and the international standing of the institute, including dissemination in highly respected journals and participation in international conferences.
Your Profile
- PhD in Materials Sciences, Physics or equivalent, and minimum 3-years research position in similar field.
- Minimum 2-year experience with TEMs and FIB workstations. Experience with JEOL TEMs and Thermo-Fischer Xe-FIBs considered a plus.
- Expertise with FIB-lift out TEM preparation methods; knowledge of cryo-workflows for air-sensitive materials.
- Experience with EDS and SIMS considered a plus.

- Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English and German are mandatory.

The appointment begins at the earliest possible date (Feb/Mar 2026) and last for at least two (2) years. Gross salary will be Grade W3/1 according to the scale of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which is 4.930,60 Euro per month (full time based, before taxes), paid 14 times a year.
