Pacific Merchant Marine Council, Navy League of the United States
The Navy League is the foremost citizens' organization to serve, support, and stand with the U.S. sea services - the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and the U.S. flag Merchant Marine. The Navy League has a network of 225 councils and 46,000 members. This new council, chartered 11 December 2006, is energetic!
The council hosts luncheons with noted guest speakers aboard our "adopted" National Liberty Ship Memorial S.S. JEREMIAH O'BRIEN, Pier 45, San Francisco, and elsewhere the third Monday of March, June, September, and December; 1130 for the social and noon for the luncheon. For Pacific Coast marine commerce is a primary focus.
In June 2009 we initiated support for the Arkansas Division Sea Cadets, San Francisco. The unit has a Merchant Marine orientation. In June 2010 the council adopted the SS UNITED STATES. The council is a "Plank Owner"; the certificate is provided by the SS United States Conservancy.
The council maintains these relationships (in the order of bonding):
~ Navy League of the United States
~ National Liberty Ship Memorial SS JEREMIAH O'BRIEN
~ San Francisco Maritime National Park Association
~ American Maritime Partnership
~ California Marine Intermodal Transportation System Advisory Council
~ Arkansas Division Sea Cadets
~ Marine Exchange of the San Francisco Bay Region
~ SS United States Conservancy
~ International Propeller Club - San Francisco Port
~ Bay Planning Coalition
~ California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference
The council's membership is international. We welcome new members and invite participation as "Citizens in Support of the Sea Services." Being a sailor or veteran is not a prerequisite. Non-USA citizens join as Associate Members. For 2011 the council is offering a new member discount to all - three years for the price of two. That is $90 US instead of the standard $125; please contact me if interested.
This council supports the U. S. flag Merchant Marine - U. S. built, owned, and registered vessels with U. S. citizen officers and crews, the nation's maritime industry and the maritime trade organizations.
Online visit the League's website, http://navyleague.org. For the council the award winning website http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PMMC-NLUS, (NLUS #1 2007, #2 2008) is the primary means of communications. Besides Xing and Yahoo Groups the council also has a web presence on Facebook, Linkedin, Twiter, Sea Folks, and elsewhere.
