About me
Prior to his employment with Madison Grace Construction, Brian Ellerbe enjoyed great success as a college basketball coach. Brian Ellerbe’s first professional coaching position out of college was as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Rutgers to Head Coach Craig Littlepage, who is now the Athletic Director at the University of Virginia. Brian Ellerbe went on become the youngest fulltime Assistant Coach in Division 1 at Bowling Green University. In 1988, Brian Ellerbe took a position as Assistant Coach at George Mason University, where he helped lead the school to its first NCAA tournament bid. As the Assistant Coach at the University of South Carolina, Brian Ellerbe coached NBA player Jo Jo English and recruited Jamie Watson. Additionally, Brian Ellerbe served as Assistant Coach at the University of Virginia, where he assisted in leading the Cavaliers to three NCAA Tournament Appearances and won the NIT Championship.
In 1994, Brian Ellerbe was hired as Head Basketball Coach at Maryland’s Loyola College, where he guided the team to its highest league finishes. In 1997, Brian Ellerbe accepted a coaching position at the University of Michigan, where he spent four years leading the program to great success, including winning the inaugural Big Ten Conference Tournament Championship. Over the course of his professional career, Brian Ellerbe has competed, coached, and recruited on an international level from areas including Nigeria, Belgium, Greece, Germany, and Poland. In 2001, Brian Ellerbe shifted his professional focus from coaching to public education through the conceptualization of the Motor City Educational Sportsplex, a program designed to enhance student achievement and athletic technology at urban schools.
A graduate of Rutgers University, Brian Ellerbe attended the college on an athletic scholarship. Brian Ellerbe played a starter position on the basketball team for all four years of matriculation, until he suffered a shoulder injury in his senior year. Brian Ellerbe graduated in 1985 with his Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Brian Ellerbe enjoys a variety of hobbies. Among Brian Ellerbe’s favorite activities are playing golf and traveling. An avid reader, Brian Ellerbe particularly enjoys the works of Michael Eric Dyson, Toni Morrison, Richard Wright, and James Baldwin.
