I started my media career as a newspaper journalist in the UK, traveled the world for a few years doing a variety of jobs, did some freelance photo-journalism, started a couple of small businesses in Australia, and then in 1980 moved into broadcast media management when I was offered the opportunity to manage a television station in Darwin, Australia. Over the next 22 years I worked for progressively larger networks – including six years as Managing Director of two publicly listed companies - gaining experience in free-to-air television and radio management and satellite pay-TV. I worked on numerous mergers, acquisitions, JVs and IPOs in Australia and Asia, and then in 2002 was appointed Secretary-General of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), based in Malaysia. My eight years with the ABU, working with broadcasters in developing countries across the Asia-Pacific region, generated a keen appreciation of the significant role that media plays in raising public awareness of critical social issues and influencing behavior that contributes to the societal development of these countries. This led to my involvement with the Singapore-based NGO, The Media Alliance, on which I now spend about half of my time as its Executive Chairman. The rest of my time is spent in the Philippines where I am working as a photographer and editor of tropical gardening books (I have just finished a new book on tropical orchids with Singapore orchid scientist Prof Chia Tet Fatt which will be published by Marshall Cavendish in November 2011) and on consultancy work in Southeast Asia (currently working on a Communication & Information project for a UN agency in Vietnam).
