About me

Debbie Straughn is committed to teaching on several levels. After growing up in Oklahoma City, she graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, began teaching immediately and, like all good teachers, found the level of education best for her: elementary school. She taught Kindergarten through fourth grades.

After earning her Master's degree in education, she began working in Educational Administration in both the Oklahoma City and Putnam City Public School systems. After working as an assistant principal in Putnam City, she applied as Principal for Deer Creek Elementary School, and in 1995, became principal.

Her work was only beginning. Using the techniques she had learned as a foundation, she created new ones. The technique she uses most often is courage. If a student reaches a certain goal, she will trade places with that student for a day. Yes: the student becomes the principal, the teacher becomes the student. Yes: she will take the spelling test on that day. Yes: the student will be in the office on that day.

She is as tough as she is playful, and the students respond. When she recently challenged her students to read 3000 books in just three weeks, they read over 4000.

For these and other creative techniques, she's been honored extensively. She was proclaimed the local Principal of the Year for Deer Creek, Putnam City, Bethany, Edmond, and Western Heights. In 2003, she was honored as Principal of the Year by the National Southwest Region. She has also been named Oklahoma Public Service Administrator of the Year.

In November of 2005 she was presented with the “Take Pride in America Award” At the White House. Take Pride’s goal is to ask volunteers from every part of America to maintain and improve the experience of visitors when they visit our cultural, natural, and historical sites.

She also instructs in the Great Expectations Program, a professional development series for both teachers and administrators. Due to her work and the work of others, Deer Creek Elementary has attained the Model School award.
