About me

Author Debran Rowland’s “The Boundaries of Her Body: The Troubling History of Women’s Rights in America” has earned Rowland recognition for her meticulous research and keen insight. Published in 2004, “The Boundaries of Her Body” demonstrated Debran Rowland’s thorough analysis of the development and limitations of the recognition of women as legal individuals. Prior to writing “The Boundaries of Her Body,” Debran Rowland was a journalist based in Chicago, though she has also written for publications in New York and Pittsburgh. Debran Rowland received the Chicago Association of Black Journalists Best News Feature Award in 1991 and the Robert L. Vann Award for Best Print News Series in 1988. Dedicated to serving others, Debran Rowland has donated her time and skill as an attorney to Chicago Volunteer Legal Services and the Midwest Immigration and Human Rights Center, particularly focusing on due process, equal process, and asylum cases. Debran Rowland also served as the former Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Rainbow House. Debran Rowland received her Juris Doctor for Loyola University of Chicago School of Law. During her law school years, Debran Rowland received the Leadership and Service Award and the American Jurisprudence Award in Civil Procedure. In addition, Debran Rowland holds a Master of Arts in Urban/Cultural Anthropology from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Carleton College.
