About me

Combining a keen understanding of the communications industry with sharp business acumen and an entrepreneurial spirit, Mark Washburn has proven to be a dynamic and forward thinking executive with a considerable number of professional achievements. Over the course of his career, Washburn has been singled out for his skills through a 40 Under 40 Award by the Boston Business Journal and as an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of The Year Finalist, among other distinctions.

After completing his education with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Based Management Systems and Marketing from Clarkson University in 1985, Mark Washburn has ascended quickly in the field of communications. Washburn was an early pioneer in the post-divestiture telecommunications industry and played a key role for MFS Communications in the development of the first national CLEC. Washburn joined MFS Communications in the start-up phase and held positions of increasing importance through the acquisition by WorldCom for $14.3B.

Additionally, Mark Washburn played in key role in the success of XCOM Technologies as the Vice president of Sales and Marketing. Mark Washburn led XCOM Technologies to $35M in revenues and profitability in the first year of operations. At XCOM Technologies, Washburn launched Remote VX, the industry’s first outsourced managed modem service offering, an offering that transformed the economics of dial-up communications and was widely imitated by most of the industry’s data service providers. Washburn initiated the sale of XCOM to Level 3 Communications for $170M, a transaction that yielded venture investors a return of 42x invested equity.

Mark Washburn has played leadership roles in launching several companies and facilitated many impressive business deals. Of particular note is Washburn’s executive level experience as president and CEO of HarvardNet where he grew revenues from 5 million to 27 million dollars before eventually leading the company’s acquisition by Allegiance Telecom (now XO Communications). Currently, Mark Washburn serves as VP of Development for HyperCube, LLC, a venture-backed communications service provider focused on the leading wireless carriers. In this capacity, he has identified, developed, and closed wholesale services contracts with two national wireless companies worth over $18M in annualized revenue.
