Richard’s areas of expertise are compliance and regulatory advice for the food and beverage industry, franchising industry, agribusiness, foreign banks, transportation and logistics providers, and general FDI and M&A work, trade finance for foreign banks, financial services, ship finance and commercial real estate.
Admitted and registered as a lawyer in Hong Kong, Australia, and the UK he has worked in China for over 16 years. Richard previously worked in Hong Kong from 1994 to with a leading British law firm. In 2000 he transferred to Shanghai where he was managing partner of a UK based International Law Firm for over 6 years.
Based in Shanghai for the past 9 years he has assisted over 200 companies to enter the Chinese market and advises on their PRC operations and compliance and licensing issues.
In 2007, he established RHK Legal recognizing the need for mid-range companies and SME’s to have access to prompt and cost effective advice for the PRC market. His expertise extends to advising companies in the manufacturing, telecommunications, education, healthcare and IT sector on strategic alliances and joint ventures in China, intellectual property rights protection and for those companies operating in food and beverage, international trade, shipping, banking and insurance, logistics and commodities.
Richard also holds a number of directorships in certain foreign invested companies operating in the PRC and is a former board member of the Australian Chamber in Shanghai, member of the British and Canadian chamber and frequent presenter to the various chambers of Commerce in Shanghai.
