Doctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in AI for Additive Manufacturing

20.05.2024, Wissenschaftliches Personal

The Chair of Computational Modeling and Simulation (CMS) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) invites applications for the position of a Doctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in the topic "Learning by Printing” associated with AI applied to Additive Manufacturing in Construction. The candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree (Ph.D.). Remuneration is 100% TVL E13 according to the German public sector rates. Applicants should be available from September 1st, 2024.

The Chair of Computational Modeling and Simulation is part of the TUM School of Engineering and Design. Our teaching and research focus lies on computer-based development of engineering products, particularly on the planning and realization of built facilities using computational modeling and simulation tools.

Research topics include geometric modeling of engineering products, methods of geometric analysis, methods of Building Information Modeling, modeling and simulation of construction processes, and the application of AI methods in engineering.

Description:

Currently, an increasing adoption of Additive Manufacturing in Construction can be observed. A major limitation is the varying quality of the produced entities in terms of geometry and properties. The research project will thus investigate ways to predict the outcomes by applying AI methods.

Your tasks:

  • Research, development and evaluation of AI/ML methods for predicting the result of Additive Manufacturing
  • Prototype development
  • Literature review
  • Publication and presentation of scientific results in international conferences and related journals
  • Contribution to the teaching and research activities of the group

Requirements:

  • Applicants should hold an MSc or Diploma in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Background in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Strong programming skills (Python)
  • Good knowledge of AI frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras

Good to have:

  • Scientific publications
  • Familiarization with ML models and methods (CNNs, LSTMs, Attention Networks, GNNs)

We offer:

  • An optimal research and supervision environment for doctoral studies and academic development, excellent networking opportunities.
  • Pleasant working environment in a friendly and committed team
  • Renumeration according to pay group E13 (TV-L)
  • General advantages of the Munich metropolitan region in terms of high quality of life and varied leisure activities

Application documents:

  • Motivation letter
  • Full CV
  • Copy of BSc and MSc degrees
