The Position

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted, and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop, and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Opportunity

Join the Process Chemistry & Catalysis department, a crucial part of the Synthetic Molecules Technical Development (PTDC) organization within Pharma Global Technical Operations (PT). You'll be instrumental in developing robust and cost-effective Drug Substance processes for our small molecules, peptides, and oligonucleotides pipeline from clinical entry to commercial manufacturing.

  • Lead Biocatalytic Innovation: Be the expert to identify, create, and design novel enzymes/enzymatic processes, enabling the efficient synthesis of our portfolio molecules for clinical and commercial supply.

  • Design High-Quality Enzyme Libraries: Drive the quality and diversity of our enzyme libraries, overseeing the design of ready-to-screen enzyme plates to accelerate process development.

  • Apply Computational Chemistry Expertise: Utilize structure-based computational chemistry to predict key amino acid positions for enzyme engineering, optimizing activity, selectivity, and stability under various process conditions.

  • Develop Advanced Computational Models: Create reaction-specific enzyme libraries using cutting-edge protein structure and experimental data, advanced modeling, and simulation techniques.

  • Maintain State-of-the-Art Infrastructure: Ensure the stability and functionality of our state-of-the-art software infrastructure essential for all required molecular modeling and simulation tasks.

  • Leverage Data Science for Prediction: Implement data analysis and Machine Learning/AI methods to enable accurate enzyme activity prediction based on existing experimental data.

  • Drive Process Development and Screening: Act as a core member of project teams, managing the screening, efficient data processing, hit identification, and verification to develop enzyme-catalyzed processes suitable for high-quality manufacturing.

  • Serve as Data Analytics Specialist: Provide first-level support for data gathering, mining, analysis, and visualizations (Spotfire experience is a plus) for the entire catalysis group, fostering a data-driven environment.

Who You Are

You are a highly skilled scientist ready to apply your deep expertise in bioinformatics and molecular modeling to real-world drug development challenges within a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.

  • You hold a PhD in synthetic chemistry, bioinformatics, biocatalysis, or molecular biology, demonstrated by a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and/or patents.

  • You are an expert in bioinformatics, specifically applying phylogenetic analysis of protein families to accurately infer distant homologs and orthologues.

  • You possess in-depth expertise in sequence modeling, de novo prediction, visualization, and analysis of protein structures, small molecule docking, and molecular dynamics simulations of protein-ligand complexes.

  • You have profound practical knowledge in data gathering, mining, analyzing, and visualization tools, including Spotfire, and experience with common databases such as SQL and/or MongoDB.

  • You are experienced in applying Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence tools and concepts, ideally extending beyond enzyme catalysis, to solve complex biological problems.

  • You bring desired experience in industrial biocatalysis or bioinformatics, preferably with hands-on experience in biotransformations (mg to multi-g scale) and knowledge of enzyme engineering techniques.

  • You are an excellent team player with strong coordination and communication skills, demonstrating proficiency in both English and German.

Ready to bring your unique qualities to Roche and make an impact? Apply now and join us in our mission to shape the future of healthcare.
