The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced, visionary, and hands-on leader to head the Roche Venture Fund . Reporting to our Head of Treasury & Financing and based in Basel , the Head will be responsible for the strategic direction, operational leadership and performance of the fund — with a focus on creating financial return and value through impactful investments in innovative life science companies.

Key Responsibilities

• Team Leadership: Manage and develop a high-performing, diverse investment team across Basel and South San Francisco. Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning.

• Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the key liaison between the venture fund and senior leadership within the broader organization. Maintain strong internal alignment while ensuring the fund operates with independence and investment discipline.

• Governance & Reporting: Ensure robust governance, risk management, and reporting frameworks. Track and communicate fund performance and strategic insights to executive stakeholders.

• Strategic Leadership: Together with the team, define and execute the fund’s investment strategy to develop a balanced portfolio across various therapeutic areas and modalities to obtain long-term value creation.

• Deal Sourcing & Execution: This position will also be responsible for their own investments. For these investments, the post-holder will lead the identification, evaluation, negotiation, and execution of investment opportunities globally; maintaining strong networks in the biotech, diagnostics, and venture ecosystems.

• Portfolio Management: Working with management, the board and investors of portfolio companies to build value, monitoring and reporting the operational and financial aspects of portfolio companies, including interviewing & hiring CEOs and other C-level positions; setting goals and budget for portfolio companies.

Qualifications & Experience

• 15+ years of experience in venture capital, life science investing, or related leadership roles in biotech/pharma.

• Demonstrated success in sourcing, structuring, managing & successfully exiting equity investments in early- to growth-stage life science companies.

• Deep understanding of the life sciences therapeutics innovation landscape; experience in diagnostics and digital health is a plus.

• Strong strategic thinking, commercial acumen and financial rigor.

• Experience serving on boards or working closely with portfolio company leadership teams. Experience serving on Audit or Compensation committees is a plus.

• Proven leadership ability, with a track record of building and mentoring high-performing teams.

• A strong global network in the biotech community of entrepreneurs, investors (both VC and corporate) and academia.

• Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.

• Advanced degree in life sciences, medicine, or a related field; MBA or equivalent business training is a plus.
