JOB DESCRIPTION

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

Roche’s Institute of Human Biology (IHB) is a newly established research center in Basel, Switzerland, dedicated to advancing human biology through the use of human model systems for translational research. Our dynamic and interdisciplinary environment fosters collaboration among biologists, engineers, and computational biologists, bridging the gap between academic and pharmaceutical research. Closely associated with Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development (pRED), we partner with leading academic institutions both locally and globally to address grand challenges with bold, innovative science.

We are excited to announce the search for a Matrix Lead in Analytics. This role is dedicated to establishing and leading a team of initially 4 data scientists with expertise in omics and imaging data sets and their integration in analytical workstreams for multi-modal and spatially-resolved data sets. As part of IHB’s Scientific Operations , this team will bridge experimental scientists in the Exploratory Biology and Translational Bioengineering Cores with computer scientists in the Computational Biology Core . The team will also have strong links to Roche’s newly established Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CS CoE), an organization of several hundred data scientists spanning expertise from advanced AI to biostatistics and large scale data management in support of scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide. Within IHB, the Analytics team will partner with Digital IHB and the Phenotyping teams. The former group encompasses software engineers who assemble commercial-grade software pipelines for internal and external use. The latter group encompasses experts in quantitative high-throughput microscopy who generate very large data streams of human model system behavior.

As the Matrix Lead in Analytics you will partner with IHB’s diverse stakeholders to develop powerful institutional approaches to quantitative life science. This includes among many activities, organization of effective modes of collaboration between Analytics team members and experimentalists across IHB’s research projects, organization of project consulting services and technology tutorials, mentoring of IHB researchers, who are working on their own analytical pipelines, and integration of research in IHB’s Computational Biology Core and the CS CoE. Supported by IHB’s PI team, you will recruit and lead your team along the guidelines you will develop for IHB’s Analytics.

The Opportunity

  • Build and lead an agile data analytics team that adopts cutting edge AI/ML and data science methodology to advance the quantitative understanding of human tissue models and their response to therapy.

  • Develop innovative conduits for truly bidirectional collaboration between experimental and analytical scientists.

  • Assemble effective strategies for workforce development in quantitative, translational life sciences.

  • Develop innovative platforms for reproducible, streamlined data analytics in a rapidly changing ecosystem of cutting edge life science.

  • Contribute to research on a broad spectrum of disease models, molecular processes, and perturbation strategies.

  • Contribute to the implementation of cutting-edge computational biology across a leading global biopharma organization.

  • Disseminate scientific innovation by contributing to publications and presenting findings at internal and external venues.

Who You Are

  • You hold a PhD in Computational Biology, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or a related discipline. With a MSc you are also encouraged to apply if you demonstrate the experience in technology innovation and people lead.

  • You are a solid expert in AI/ML and statistical methods in general and present an extensive portfolio of successful projects in either omics or image analysis.

  • You can present a clear vision of paths to integrating data modalities in spatial biology.

  • You possess a deep understanding of software engineering and adoption/dissemination of open-source software platforms

  • You demonstrate a research track record with first-author publications in top-tier CS conferences and journals, or critical contributions as an enabler of analytical pipelines in high-profile life science projects.

  • Throughout your career you have developed agility, allowing you to rapidly pivot to new scientific questions and adopt diverse analytical frameworks.

  • You are a strong communicator with excellent conduct of establishing healthy and productive collaborations across disciplinary and organizational boundaries.

  • Experience in leading project teams and/or mentoring students is a plus.

How to apply

  • Send your CV.

  • Write a Vision Statement (1 page on your past wins, 2 pages on your vision/plan for an impactful Analytics team).

  • (Optional) Include contact info for three references.
