Exploring Nanoscale Magnetism with Single Spins in Diamond

100%, starting by agreement

The Basel Quantum Sensing group at the Department of Physics, University of Basel, is offering a fully funded PhD position in the field of quantum sensing and scanning probe microscopy. Our research focuses on using single electron spins in diamond as sensors to explore magnetic phenomena at the nanoscale.
This doctoral project will center around the development and application of scanning magnetometry at ultra-low temperatures (down to 100 mK). Using Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) and Silicon Vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond, the project aims to probe magnetic properties of low-dimensional quantum materials and develop advanced sensing methods for future quantum technologies.
You will be embedded in a vibrant, international research group with strong expertise in quantum sensing and nanoscale physics, and benefit from an open and supportive scientific environment.

Your position

As a PhD student in this project, you will:

  • Conduct quantum sensing experiments at cryogenic temperatures
  • Investigate the photophysics and spin dynamics of NV and SiV centers in diamond
  • Develop and apply novel sensing techniques, such as electrometry or all-optical magnetometry
  • Study nanoscale magnetism in emerging quantum materials (e.g. van der Waals magnets, antiferromagnets)
  • Collaborate with national and international partners
  • Present your research at conferences and publish in high-impact journals

Your profile

Required:

  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in Physics or a related discipline
  • Strong interest in experimental quantum science and nanotechnology
  • Keen to gain hands-on experience in laboratory research
  • Analytical thinking, motivation, and the ability to work both independently and in a team

Desirable:
  • Experience with optics, cryogenics, or scanning probe techniques
  • Knowledge of nanofabrication or cleanroom methods
  • Programming skills for data acquisition and analysis

We offer you

  • A fully funded PhD position in a leading research group at the University of Basel
  • Access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and laboratories
  • A collaborative, inclusive, and interdisciplinary research environment
  • Opportunities for international collaboration and professional development
  • A diverse and welcoming community in Basel, a hub for science and innovation in the heart of Europe
Application / Contact

Please submit your application via our online recruiting platform, including:
  • Cover letter outlining your motivation and interest
  • CV
  • Academic transcripts
  • Contact details of at least one academic reference

Deadline: Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Start date: by agreement
